Queer Prom Is This Saturday, June 11, in Seattle

Prom is a big deal in high school and a lot of people have fond memories of theirs. Parents take photos of their kids and dates, capturing some of the moments that make up those memories. Beautiful dresses, dinners, sparkly lights, music, dancing, and friends combine for a magical night. But, not for everyone.

LGBTQ people don’t usually have those wonderful memories because they either didn’t attend prom, or they didn’t attend as themselves. Some school districts don’t allow same sex dates. Some places aren’t safe for LGBTQ people. These are the reasons that gave birth to the idea of queer prom, an event that started many years ago and takes places in communities across the nation.

Queer Prom in Seattle this year takes place on Saturday, June 11th, from 7 pm, when the doors open, to midnight, at the Oddfellows Building, located at 915 E. Pine St on Capital Hill.

The evening starts with a burlesque and drag show that begins at 8 pm, and grooves on into a dance party that lasts until the end of the night. The night includes over a dozen performers, and at 9:30 pm the Queer Court Competition takes place to choose the royalty for the night. The dance party starts at 10:30 pm.

At this late date the only tickets left are the “All Night Long” options. The cost is $40 and it will gain you admission to everything from the burlesque and drag show to the dance party.

The prom is also “a fundraiser for What the Funk, An All BIPOC Burlesque Festival! The only BIPOC Festival in the Pacific Northwest.”
