It’s a cool piece of news for a hot summer day.

Maricopa Water and Ice accepted the Maricopa Chamber of Commerce ’s New Chamber Member of the Year award during the organization’s annual awards banquet June 1.

Owner Tonya Thompson said she felt “truly grateful” for the recognition.

“Being nominated and winning the award is such an honor,” Thompson said.

The store joined the chamber in December and was quickly nominated for the newly minted award. It beat out five other businesses: the CP Glover Foundation, Desert Sun Performing Arts, F.O.R. Maricopa, Thai Chili 2 Go and the UPS Store.

Chamber Executive Director Kelly Anderson noted Thompson’s expertise and community work as reasons chamber members voted for the cold treats shop.

“Tonya is an extraordinary woman who has built an amazing business, especially since she’s about to celebrate her 20th year here in Maricopa,” Anderson said. “We’re thrilled to recognize her for her hard work and contributions to the community.”

Maricopa Water and Ice opened in 2004 and quickly became a staple to the community, especially for its drinking water, Thrifty brand ice cream and fresh smoothies.
