Transit ridership increased in last year

Maricopa’s public transit saw a few more riders over the past year, according to the city’s transit authorities.

Transit Supervisor Toni Flood told members of the Transit Advisory Committee on Monday that ridership on the Maricopa Express Transit went up more than 5.7% between July 2023 and May 2024. That bump amounted to an additional 435 riders compared to July 2022 through May 2023.

The dial-a-ride service — which sees about half as many riders and charges $1 per ride — saw a decrease this past year compared to the same period the year before. That ridership went down about 6.2% despite the senior community requesting an increase in the service at previous meetings.

The Maricopa Community Center amounted to 33% of all commercial and community dial-a-ride drop-offs, while Tortosa took the cake for residential. About 41% of all drop-offs to residential areas were made in the Tortosa subdivision.

Final numbers for the 2024 fiscal year will be available during the next Transit Advisory Committee meeting in September.
