Maricopa Police Department is investigating reports of vandals wreaking havoc in the Santa Rosa Crossing neighborhood late last night.
It was just before midnight when an unknown male suspect “attempted to break the driver’s side rear window of Gail Hartig’s white 2017 Toyota Camry with a large rock” in the driveway of her Acacia Avenue home near Desert Willow Drive.
“The suspect was wearing a hoodie and long pants,” MPD Officer D. Kaufman wrote in a police report obtained by InMaricopa today. “The hoodie was tied up close to his face, making it impossible to see the face.”
The damage to Hartig’s window is estimated at $400.
Hartig reports “four kids all dressed in black” were walking down her street about 15 minutes before someone tried to hurl a rock through her car window. She also reports “gang graffiti” on her next-door neighbor’s outside wall.
In security camera footage provided to police, the suspect is seen lobbing what looks like a sizeable landscape rock at the car, then squealing like a little weenie over an open fire when the car alarm goes off, covering his face with his hands and sprinting off through a neighbor’s front yard like a scared kitten.
“Beginning to really dislike this town,” Hartig said.
If the suspect is identified and apprehended, the police report suggests he would be charged with criminal damage to property, a Class 1 misdemeanor in Arizona that carries a sentence of six months in jail and up to $2,500 in fines.
Senita resident Fatima Almansori also reports the same night her grey 2020 Hyundai Elantra was stolen from her Raynon Street home, one neighborhood over from Santa Rosa Crossing. It is unknown if the events are connected.
