Disabled vet gets a ‘cool’ surprise on a sizzling summer day

Maricopa Meadows resident Scott Blake is about to have one less thing to sweat over.

Blake, 65, will finally get to enjoy a cool night in his home this weekend after enduring two years with a faulty air conditioning unit.

“It’s very frustrating,” he said. “My wife and I spend days with it 95 or 97 degrees in the house. I went to bed last night and it’s still 92 degrees at midnight.”

The disabled Marines veteran said he, his wife and their dog have spent two summers enduring a hot house with a barely operating unit.

“Last summer was a killer, we went for about two months running just off fans,” he said. “All that did was blow hot air around.”

Out of frustration trying to sleep in a home that felt like “a total sauna,” Blake contacted 911 Air Repair hoping they could help fix the unit at a discount since the couple couldn’t afford to purchase a new unit.

Owner Ray Nieves said the situation was worse than he first thought when Blake contacted them.

“When we showed up it was pretty bad. It was a really, really old original system,” Nieves said. “I talked to them for like 20 minutes in their home and I was just dripping [with sweat].”

Nieves partnered with Smiley Crane and Alex Jauregui of Trane Technologies to have the 18-year-old unit replaced free of charge.

“It’s hard when you see people in this situation, like, how is this possible?” he said. “Luckily, we’re in a position where we’re able to go out and help.”

Jauregui said a new unit and installation can run up to $13,000.

“It’s a very huge chunk of money and it’s unfortunate because it’s a necessity not a luxury here,” he said.

Nieves agreed, adding Blake is “going to be sleeping a lot better.”

As for Blake and his family, the gratitude felt beyond incredible.

“This is so great, I can’t express it,” Blake said. “I’m just looking forward to it being cool in my house and having this off our shoulders. I won’t have to worry anymore about our A/C being totally gone.”
