Liquid Sunburn sauce is ‘ridiculously hot’ and made in Maricopa. Here’s how to score a free bottle

This local real estate agent is turning up the heat with his Maricopa-made condiment that’s hotter than an Arizona summer afternoon — “Daddy Dog’s Liquid Sunburn XXX hot sauce.”

Brian Petersheim, a real estate agent for HomeSmart Success, is cooking up a batch of his Facebook-famous hot sauce filled with Carolina Reapers to give away to community members this week.

He makes the hot sauce as a hobby but gives it away to other local hot sauce freaks. It’s his fifth year doing so.

Petersheim’s sauce-making obsession started when he just couldn’t find a hot sauce he liked. His wife, Suzanne, bought him a hot sauce kit containing a single ghost pepper and he was hooked.

Since then, Petersheim has upgraded from ghost peppers to Carolina Reapers — and a whole lot of them.

“It’s the hottest commercially available pepper in the world,” Petersheim said of the Carolina Reaper. “It’s about 2 million Scoville units.”

Each batch of seven bottles contains about six ounces of Carolina Reapers. He made over 50 bottles.

“I’m my best customer,” Petersheim said. “I make it the way that I like it, and that’s why I make it so hot.”

Aside from the Carolina Reapers, the dark red condiment is made of tomatoes, onions, mandarin oranges, garlic, cilantro, salt, vinegar and water.

“It’s outrageously hot,” Petersheim said, “for somebody that says, ‘Ooh, Tabasco’s spicy,’ this going to be way too hot.”

He hopes in coming years it will get hotter as Pepper X, a crossbred veggie made by Charlotte, N.C.-based chili breeder Ed Currie, the creator of the Carolina Reaper, is hotter, hits the shelves and eventually gets added to his sauce.

Petersheim is also working on a batch of Carolina Reaper pepper flakes but has yet to decide how many he will be giving out.

“People are going to say, ‘that’s too hot’,” Petersheim said. “I like it that way.”
