When a herd of wild horses congregated by the roadside on State Route 347 last Saturday, one foal got separated from the pack and ended up in a police chase.

Gila River Police Department found the young equine near the Riggs Road intersection June 15, where a group of concerned motorists stopped and waited for help to arrive. Some even got out of their cars and offered a helping hoof.

“We got the baby unstuck from the barb[ed] wire and kept it off the road until the [GRPD] cop got there,” said Sorrento resident Kathie Gerow-Martin.

Maricopa Meadows resident Alyssa Ferguson captured this video, showing two GRPD cruisers, red and blue lights flashing, in hot pursuit as the scrappy little horse gallops down the northbound shoulder.

According to drivers at the scene, the wild horse got stuck on a fence. Police officers helped it clear the palisade and reunite with its herd.

Around 8:30 a.m. today, workers were seen fixing the broken fence. The herd returned to the roadside during morning rush hour today, several drivers in the area reported.

According to data from the Arizona Department of Transportation, there were nine accidents caused by large wild animals on SR 347 near Maricopa last year. It’s important to let the authorities know if you see a wild horse stuck or wandering in the highway.

You call GRPD’s non-emergency line at 520-562-4511 or, in an emergency, dial 911.
