Rancho family pulls out all the flags for ‘Super Elite’ football

Maricopa Super Elite Flag Football founders Jourdyn and Jeremiah Merdell invite young athletes to join their co-ed flag football league.

Maricopa Super Elite, an active NFL Flag league for more than three years, offers recreational opportunities for kids aged 4 to 13, giving them a chance to join teams in their age groups, learn a fun sport and make new friends.

NFL Flag is the largest youth flag football league in the U.S. and the Merdells brought it to Maricopa.

“We have lived here for almost eight years now and we are excited to bring more sports to Maricopa, especially when there wasn’t any out here,” said Jourdyn Merdell.

This flag league not only runs two to three seasons a year, but it also runs a variety of training camps throughout the year to gear kids up for flag football.

Jeremiah Merdell brings 16 years of experience playing on various Arizona flag football teams. He has also played in the travel flag football league, taking him around the U.S. With this experience, he knows the importance of running a league and what makes it an excellent experience for the children and parents.

“We are constantly learning every season. We have four kids of our own, so the importance of creating a safe, fun and eventful environment is important to us,” said Jourdyn Merdell.

Maricopa Super Elite has a fall season coming up and due to a lot of interest, registration is opening early. The fall season “Friday Night Lights” starts in October and runs to December, with Thanksgiving week off. Registration is currently open, and the league is looking for coaches and referees.

The Merdells’ league separates them from others as they not only stage a draft, what they call a “Skills Day,” for the teams, but coaches can bring kids in by request. Coaches are there to make a great impact on their kids and Maricopa Super Elite allows kids to request their coaches.

“Our spring season saw almost 300 flag football players, and we’re now looking to grow to continue to keep kids up and active while learning and having fun,” Jourdyn Merdell said. “We enjoy being out there and seeing all the kids growing and developing in skills they didn’t know they had. We have kids and coaches still with us from the very beginning, and they have bloomed in their skillset, confidence and sportsmanship.”

Maricopa Super Elite has age groups 4 to 6, 7 to 8, 9 to 10 and 11 to 13. This is a competitive game for those aged 7 to 13 and championship rings will be given out to the winning team. For the 4 to 6 age group, it is teaching them all about the fundamentals of flag football and medals will be given out to each kid as this group is noncompetitive.

Parents of interested kids who want to join Super Elite can text 520-329-3196, email MaricopaSuperElite.com or head to their website here for more information.
