ProQual landscaper pulled stolen gun in fit of road rage, cops say

A local landscaping company might consider adding background checks to its hiring process after an employee with 64 prior criminal charges was arrested again June 20 — this time, for pointing a stolen gun at a stranger while in a company work van.

Maricopa police arrested Kurt T. Gilhooly, 34, on three felony weapons charges, according to a probable cause statement obtained by InMaricopa .

Cops received the road rage report around 8 a.m. after a driver said he encountered Gilhooly near North Alma Street and North Smith Farms Circle in Desert Passage.

The driver told dispatchers Gilhooly was driving a white minivan with the ProQual Landscaping logo “all over it.” Gilhooly reportedly yelled profanities at the driver before pulling out a handgun and pointing it out his window.

A branch manager for Tempe-based ProQual Landscaping identified Gilhooly and confirmed with GPS data the van was at the area of the incident. It didn’t take long for cops to find out Gilhooly was not legally allowed to have a gun because he is a convicted felon who also has an active order of protection against him.

Officers found Gilhooly near West Cobblestone and North Struebing Drives in Cobblestone Farms around 10:30 a.m. He immediately denied everything, according to the probable-cause statement.

Unluckily for him, cops searched the landscaping van and found a stolen 9-millimeter pistol in Gilhooly’s backpack. That’s when he reportedly came clean and admitted to road raging.

When asked about the gun, which was reported stolen last August, Gilhooly said he bought it from a Gilbert gun shop in October.

Public records show Gilhooly has a lengthy criminal history including 64 charges of burglary, domestic battery, fighting, drugs and DUI in Arizona and Illinois. The records suggest Gilhooly currently lives in a Tempe apartment.

Gilhooly was booked into the Pinal County jail and faces more than 28 years in prison.
