Newest stoplight comes to dangerous intersection next week

Work on Maricopa’s latest traffic light is set to begin July 15 and last three months.

Tempe-based Nesbitt Contracting Co. will construct the signal at the crash-prone intersection of Bowlin and White and Parker Roads. Lanes will be added to three legs of the intersection, officials said.

It is part of the city’s 2024 capital improvements program, which budgeted $1.7 million for the signal and road improvements a short jog from Maricopa Police Department’s new headquarters on Bowlin.

“The project consists of widening the south and east legs of the intersection, along with the installation of a traffic signal,” city spokesperson Quinn Konold said. “All four travel directions will have dedicated left turn bays, and westbound Bowlin Road will have a continuous right turn lane.”

The intersection will be converted into a four-way stop once construction is underway, and until the traffic signal flashes into operation, Konold said.

The signal would eliminate the existing two-way stop intersection where T-bone crashes are common. The White and Park Road crossing of the intersection is free-flowing north and south without stop signs.

The intersection is one of two that connects the east side of Maricopa to the west.

The project was originally planned to start in March and would have been completed by now.
