New details released in Meadows stabbing death

    By Brian Petersheim Jr., Reporter,

Autopsy reports released to InMaricopa today reveal new details about the dead body found in a Maricopa Meadows backyard in April.

Makaiel Thomas’s brother and landlord were the last people to see the 24-year-old alive April 26, according to the autopsy report.

The landlord was there to serve an eviction notice as the lease had ended the day before. She told Thomas she would be back April 29 to check the home, the report states.

When the landlord returned, she knocked on the door to no response. She found Thomas dead in the backyard.

Maricopa Police Department responded and pronounced Thomas dead. Officers noted his body was in “early stages of decomposition.” The death was ruled a stabbing June 4.

Police noted there was no security camera footage available and the unlocked backyard gate showed no signs of forced entry. A toppled ladder was lying 10 feet away from the body.

The entire body was discolored, according to the autopsy report. Examiners noted a large number of maggots in the mouth, on the head, chest and hips, and on his sweatshirt. Skin was falling off the body, but examiners stated there was “no obvious trauma noted on other parts of the body except the stab wound.”

Medical examiners said a 6-inch serrated knife with a long plastic handle was still lodged inside his abdomen. The knife punctured his small and large intestines. There was blood on his hand and forearm.

“Numerous unknown pills were found in the stomach contents,” the autopsy report states. There were more than 10 partially digested pills of various sizes. Toxicology reports also released today came up negative for narcotics or other dangerous drugs.

Medical examiners closed the case and labeled the manner of death as “undetermined.” They don’t know if it was a suicide, murder or accident.

MPD spokesperson Monica Williams sent this statement to InMaricopa today:

“Given the complexity and sensitivity of this case, our investigation is still open and actively ongoing. We approach each investigation with the utmost diligence and commitment to uncovering the truth. When the manner of death is undetermined, it necessitates a thorough and comprehensive examination of all available evidence. This includes reviewing forensic data, conducting interviews, and exploring all possible scenarios to ascertain whether a crime has occurred. Our primary objective is to ensure justice and provide clarity for the family and community. While the current status of the investigation does not conclusively indicate whether the incident was a crime, we are steadfast in our efforts to follow every lead and examine every piece of evidence meticulously.
We appreciate the public’s patience and understanding as we continue our work. Please rest assured that the Maricopa Police Department is dedicated to upholding the highest standards of investigative procedures to reach a conclusive and just resolution.”
