Maricopa Fire and Medical Department responded to and extinguished five firework-related fires this Independence Day, according to fire department records released to InMaricopa today .

Firefighters were busy all night, travelling around town extinguishing trash cans and grass fires caused by people recklessly blowing stuff up .

    Tortosa – 9:36 p.m.

Engine 572 crews responded to their first report of the night, a dumpster fire at a vacant lot on the 36000 block of West San Avarez Avenue.

A small group of men extinguished the dumpster with a garden hose before crews arrived, the report stated. There was no property damage.

    Desert Cedars – 10:03 p.m.

The second call was in a grassy area on North Desert Cedars Drive . Ladder 574 responded to the one-acre grassfire sparked by fireworks.

The slow spreading fire was put out with 30 gallons of water and a hand tool. There was no property loss.

The Lakes at Rancho El Dorado – 10:04 p.m.

Firefighters cleared the scene and immediately headed to the third fire, another grassfire, on the 40000 block of West Hillman Drive.

This fire garnered the largest response of the night because it was reported as a “working residential fire.” Eight units were dispatched.

Ladder Tender 571 arrived and confirmed no home had caught fire. The fire was in an open field outside a residential block wall.

Three dispatched mutual aid vehicles and Ladder 574 were cleared before they arrived.

The fire was estimated to be one-eighth of an acre when crews extinguished it at 10:20 p.m., according to the report. There was no property loss.

    West Bowlin Road 10:39 p.m.

Crews with Engine 574 responded to a report of a playground trash can fire at a park near West Bowlin Road.

They extinguished the fire with a can of pressurized water and noted there were fireworks inside the can. They departed at 10:48 p.m.

    Senita – 11:24 p.m.

The final fire of the night was at a home on the 42000 block of West Avella Drive. Ladder Tender 571 responded to the reported garbage can fire in the home’s driveway.

Crews arrived at 11:30 p.m. and quickly extinguished the small blaze. There was no property damage.

The person who dialed 9-1-1 told first responders he left the fireworks out and believed his father chucked them into the trash can before he left.
