Postal increase? It’s a mixed bag of mail for Maricopans

Many Maricopa residents are unfazed by the latest increase in the price of snail mail, which goes into effect today , compliments of the U.S. Postal Service.

The 5-cent increase approved by the Postal Regulatory Commission brings the price of sending a letter weighing an ounce or less to 73 cents.

Many responding to the latest postal increase told InMaricopa they’re opting to buy Forever stamps rather than eat future increases.

Others said they don’t even bother to use stamps when email and other internet communications work just fine.

“What is this, 1800s?” said Caoimhín Michael Erasmus Eaton. “Nobody uses the Pony Express anymore, grandpa. The only things I get in the mail is junk. Nearly everything is digital now.”

Tammy Ecclesia agreed saying, “Whey be angry about snail mail? Most people use email these days.”

Teresa Rockwood offered a different perspective.

“For those of us who still send actual handwritten cards to family and friends for birthdays, anniversaries and holidays, this is getting to be burdensome,” Rockwood said. “I do over 50 holiday cards each Christmas and mail 20 to 30 a month to church members. I enjoy doing it and folks seem to enjoy doing it and folks seem to enjoy receiving a card, but it is about to be priced out of my ability to continue doing it. Sad.”

USPS prices remain among the most affordable in the world, postal officials contend.

Maricopan Megan McDermott sees it similarly.

“Compared to how much the price of everything else has gone up, a stamp seems to be a stupid one to complain about,” she said.
