4-way stop paves way for new signal

A four-way stop will impact drivers starting today until a more permanent, and much more expensive solution is in place.

Tempe-based Nesbitt Contracting installed the four-way stop at the intersection of West Bowlin and North White and Parker Roads this morning.

The stop signs and lane restrictions will remain for several months until the $1.7 million project is complete.

“The project consists of widening the south and east legs of the intersection along with the installation of a traffic signal,” city spokesperson Quinn Konold said. “All four travel directions will have dedicated left turn bays and westbound Bowlin Road will have a continuous right turn lane.”

The signal eliminates yesterday’s two-way stop intersection where T-bone crashes have been common. The White and Parker Road crossing was, until this morning, free flowing north and south without stop signs.

The intersection is one of two that connects the east side of Maricopa to the west. It is slated to be finished Oct. 15, according to a city-maintained map .
