Stalker ex impersonated cop in sex trafficking hoax: report

    By Brian Petersheim Jr., Reporter,

A Rancho El Dorado man who wanted revenge on his estranged wife spun an elaborate web of lies, using email accounts to manufacture characters and impersonating the whole cast, police allege.

Gregory J. Middents, 39, was arrested Thursday on charges of aggravated harassment and tampering with public records after he told police his wife violated a protective order — but cops found the man was just emailing himself and others under several aliases.

Middents took things too far when he impersonated a Maricopa Police Department officer, according to a report obtained by InMaricopa .

It was April 11 when Middents first reported to police that his estranged wife violated an order of protection by contacting him via email. In reality, Middents was the defendant in that protective order case, the report stated. He continued to file similar reports over the following months.

Investigators discovered Middents created the suspect email account using the same IP address in December he had used to access his own personal mailbox. They noted Middents’ wife could not have made the account because she had not been at that address in the last three years.

Middents’ wife was in a mental health assisted living residence where she did not have access to electronics, nor “a desire to contact Gregory.”

Healthcare workers at the facility provided multiple emails sent to Middents’ wife from him under his own name and several aliases. The aliases, including Kristina Loughran, who is not a real person, all matched email addresses accessed from Middents’s cell phone.

Middents allegedly submitted two false reports to Arizona Adult Protective Services through his Kristina Loughran alias. The false reports claimed his estranged wife was being “sex trafficked by her mental health care workers.”

MPD received 10 false reports from Middents about his wife, according to the police document. Middents also submitted an order of protection petition to the Casa Grande City court, “completed with similar false information,” where he said, “mental health professionals were aiding his wife in committing crimes against him.”

Police drew attention to one email to the staff members where Middents claimed to be a Maricopa police officer.

“All of the documents created by Gregory appeared similar in tone, content, and were all focused on contacting or locating his estranged wife,” the police report stated.

Middents was arrested at his Rancho El Dorado home on North Falcon Lane and booked into the Pinal County Jail. He faces two years in prison.
