Maricopa Police Department released new details in a shots fired situation in Desert Cedars Friday night that resulted in the arrest of 53-year-old Michael A. Ramirez.

Cops charged Ramirez with unlawfully firing a gun and two counts of disorderly conduct, according to a probable cause statement obtained by InMaricopa .

Officers responded to the home in the 44500 block of West Windrose Drive around 9 p.m. after Ramirez’s ex-girlfriend dialed 9-1-1 from a locked closet reporting she thought Ramirez had a gun and fired several rounds in the backyard. MPD previously reported the woman was Ramirez’s wife.

Police set up a perimeter and commanded Ramirez to exit the home, the report stated. Ramirez came out the front door with a semiautomatic pistol in his hand, and when officers told him to drop it, he “slowly dropped his firearm while pointing it towards officers,” before he was tackled and tased.

A search uncovered five spent 22-caliber shell casings on the property and one live round in his pistol.

Ramirez admitted to firing his pistol in the backyard because he thought “he heard from his deceased father, telling him to shoot in the air,” according to the probable cause statement.

Ramirez’s bedridden brother told police Ramirez and his ex-girlfriend were arguing shortly before he heard “loud explosions” coming from the backyard.

The ex-girlfriend told police she locked herself in a closet when she heard the gunshots.

Ramirez was booked into the Pinal County jail that night. He faces five years in prison.
