WATCH: Unskilled burglar fails home invasion, steals garden gnome instead

Maricopa Police Department released surveillance and body camera footage this week of a crime that made InMaricopa’s list of the top 15 bizarre and unusual crimes last year .

The new footage shows 27-year-old Sage E. Owens walking up to a Rancho El Dorado home on North Anne Lane, spray-painting the doorbell camera and trying to break into the front windows.

After about five minutes fumbling with the window, Owens can be seen leaving and trying to break into a car in the driveway.

After this scene, she reportedly stole a garden gnome from the front yard of the house next door.

In new bodycam footage, officers question Owens on a nearby street as she munches on an orange.

Owens, with black spray paint on her hands and a garden gnome on her person, told the cops she did nothing wrong.

When officers asked about the can of spray paint in her bag, Owens said she “asked somebody else,” whom she did not know, to paint the doorbell. She then changed her story again, saying “they asked me if they could use my spray paint.”

Owens eventually admitted to spray painting the doorbell.

That friend in an interview with police denied Owens’ account, so officers placed her in handcuffs and began searching her bags, which contained the missing garden gnome, the spray paint and many other random items.

Owens was booked into Pinal County jail on two felony charges of burglary and trespassing. The disposition of the case is unknown because court documents have not been made available.
