‘Largest cyber outage in history’ hits Maricopa, Pinal County

The CrowdStrike tech outage that caused computers using Microsoft Windows to crash nationwide found its way to Pinal County and City of Maricopa offices, officials said today.

“It affected employee laptops, computers and servers,” Pinal County spokesperson James Daniels told InMaricopa . “It hit about two-thirds of the computers we have, we believe.”

City spokesperson Monica Williams confirmed the city’s SmartGov portal used by third parties to submit permitting documents was also struck.

“It has been down intermittently throughout the day,” Williams said. “We do have staff monitoring the situation, so thankfully it appears to only be impacting that one service.”

Daniels said the computer crash was discovered around midnight today and “people have been working on it since the early hours of the morning.”

He said services, including elections, are unfazed by the outage.

County Recorder Dana Lewis also issued a statement.

“While election systems are isolated from the outside world and were not impacted by this update, other PCs in the county, including those in the Recorder’s office were affected,” Lewis said. “We are working diligently to revert the change and restore functionality to these systems. The AVID systems were not affected and there are currently no significant community service impacts.”

Because it happened on a Friday the impact is lessened compared to busier days of the working week, he said.

The national outage hit government agencies, airlines, emergency dispatchers and hospitals.

It was the result of a bad software update sent by an Austin, Texas-based company, CrowdStrike. The software was intended to protect users from hackers.
