    Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park September Programs

    Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park, 900 Kennesaw Mountain Drive in Kennesaw, is hosting a number of programs in August.

    All programs are outdoors and weather dependent. They are held at the visitor center unless otherwise noted.

    Museum Tours will be every Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 2 p.m.Sept. 1-2 at 11 a.m., noon, 2 and 3 p.m. will be Artillery Demonstrations. Artillery was a vital component to the operations of both armies during the Atlanta Campaign and played a key role in several engagements during the Battle of Kennesaw Mountain. Living historians will hold camp and shoot the cannon at the above listed times. This program is not at the Visitor Center. Parking is at the Pigeon Hill site at Burnt Hickory Road.Sept. 7 at 11 a.m. will be Red-Tailed Hawks: Kennesaw Mountain’s Bird of Prey. Participants can come out to enjoy a ranger-led program on the red-tailed hawk, one of Kennesaw Mountain’s birds of prey. During the presentation, the ranger will help participants become more familiar with this animal by understanding their habitat, family dynamics and how to help protect them for future generations. This program will be held at the Big Kennesaw Mountain overlook. Shuttle service will be available.Sept. 14 at 11 a.m. will be the Mountain Top Hike. This ranger-led hike will take participants roughly 1-mile up to the peak of Big Kennesaw Mountain. Along the way, participants will learn about the flora and fauna of the area and the history from the pre-history age through the Civil War and on to today. The hike is semi-strenuous so bring water and good shoes.Sept. 15 at 11 a.m., noon, 2 and 3 p.m. will be The Henry Rifle and the Atlanta Campaign. Known as “that dang Yankee gun you load on Sunday and can fire all week,” the Henry repeating rifle represented the tip of the spear of small arms technology. While it wasn’t standard issue, it made a huge difference whenever it was showcased. Participants can join special infantry demonstrations highlighting the advantage of the repeating rifle as well its use during the Atlanta Campaign and the Battle of Kennesaw Mountain.Sept. 21-22 at 11 a.m., noon, 2 and 3 p.m. will be Living History Weekend with the 79th PA and 31st AL. Participants can join guests from the 79th PA Union and 31st AL Confederate regiments for a weekend of infantry and living history programs. These living historians will portray infantry tactics and camp life unique to both the U.S. and Confederate armies of the Atlanta Campaign.Sept. 28 at 1 p.m. will be “Hug a Tree and Survive” event. Participants can learn about the importance of outdoor safety through the “Hug a Tree” program. The event is for families and children, 5-12 years old, who want to explore the outdoors while staying safe and prepared. Activities will include demonstrations on what to do when lost and how to attract attention and stay visible. The program will be held in the Visitor Center auditorium.Sept. 29 at 11 a.m. will be the Cheatham Hill History Walk. Participants can enjoy a casual, history-focused walk around one of the most significant sites of the Battle of Kennesaw Mountain. Participants can hear accounts from Union and Confederate survivors and experience the area that would earn the nickname the “Dead Angle.” Parking will be at the end of Cheatham Hill Drive off Dallas Highway.
