Dr. Donald J. Green, President of Gordon State College, recently visited the monthly meeting of Voiture Local No. 1635 of the Veterans group known as “40 and 8” to thank them for their continued support of the college’s nursing program.

Meeting in the American Legion Post 29 social hall in Marietta, Dr. Green shared the impact of their support of multiple nursing scholarships throughout the past nine years. Dr. Green emphasized that every one of the scholarship recipients supported by 40 and 8, has graduated with a bachelor's degree in nursing.

Dr. Green read the first names of all of those awardees and shared the pride that the administration has of the recipients’ accomplishments since graduation.

The Voiture, French for Veterans group, presents two $2,000 scholarships to faculty nominated recipients each year. It is also noted, the 40 and 8 national organization supports with an additional $1,500 scholarship each year.

Chef de Gare Gail Evilsizor commented on being proud of the work the Voiture has accomplished over the last nine years.

“You sometimes never really know the impact your efforts have in their lives and subsequently in the community,” Evilsizor said.

The 40 and 8 veterans’ group was started after the First World War and patterned after the very famous 40 soldiers and 8 horses, who saved the small town in France. The group in Marietta continues in that tradition of helping people through their scholarship program and for veterans and dependents in dire need.
