    Below are some of the upcoming events happening at Cobb County’s Senior Centers in September.

    Freeman Poole Senior Center

    Freeman Poole Senior Center, 4025 S. Hurt Road in Smyrna, will have:

    Turning Points in U.S. Immigration History Exhibit from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 1-10. Seniors can view Kennesaw State University’s traveling exhibit, Refuge or Refusal: Turning Points in U.S. Immigration History. This exhibit explores the impact of the turning points in U.S. immigration policy and the factors that influenced them, from global conflicts and economic conditions to cultural trends and social aspirations.Refuge or Refusal Presentation by KSU from 11 a.m. to noon on Oct. 2. Seniors can join staff from KSU’s Museum of History and Holocaust Education for a presentation relating to the traveling exhibit Refuge or Refusal: Turning Points in U.S. Immigration History, on display at the center.First Friday Films from 12:30 to 3 p.m. on Oct. 4. Seniors can learn how to create upcycled jewelry by making paper beads from recycled magazines. Presented by Keep Cobb Beautiful.My Chart - Take Charge of Your Healthcare from 11 a.m. to noon on Oct. 8. MyChart, a product of EPIC, lets one see their medications, test results, upcoming appointments, medical bills, price estimates and more all in one place. This class will teach seniors the basic features of MyChart, how to maneuver through the system and tips for maximizing its benefits. Seniors should bring their “smart” device along so they can get hands on practice. Presented by B.E.S.T (Broadening & Enriching Seniors Together).Veteran Connection from 10 to 11:30 a.m. on Oct. 8. Seniors can join other veterans each month for fellowship and special guest presentations. These meetings are for both women and men to come together to share their experiences with each other.Preventing Financial Abuse Webinar from 11 a.m. to noon on Oct. 15. Seniors can join at the center for a virtual webinar to learn about financial crimes targeting older adults. After this presentation one will know how to recognize, report, protect and prevent scams and financial abuse from happening to them. Presented by First IC Bank.Believable or Batty? Game from 11 a.m. to noon on Oct. 17. Think you know a lot about bats? There are a few things you might be surprised to learn. Seniors can join the center to play this fun game and brush up on bat facts.Freeman Foodies from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Oct. 18. Lunch on your own at Maggiano’s Little Italy, 1601 Cumberland Mall, Suite 200 in Atlanta.Lip Sync Battle from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Oct. 21 Cost $5. Witness an epic battle between Senior Services staff and participants from different centers lip syncing their hearts out to favorite jams. A day filled with wigs, heels and lots of spandex and glitter await. Refreshments provided.Covid and Flu Vaccine Clinic from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Oct. 21. Seniors should bring insurance information. Cobb and Douglas Public Health will get seniors up to date with Flu and Covid vaccines.AARP Smart Driver from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Oct. 23. Please arrive by 9 a.m. Cost $20 AARP members, $25 Non-members. Payable to instructor. Check with one’s insurance agent about a possible discount for taking this class. Bring a lunch.Bingo Bash from noon to 2 p.m. on Oct. 28. Cost $3. Fundraiser to benefit the center.Terrarium Workshop from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Oct. 29. Seniors can let their imagination go wild and create a terrarium or fairy garden. Bring a glass container. Presented by Cobb County UGA Extension.Monster Mash Happy Hour from 1 to 2 p.m. on Oct. 31. Cost $5. Seniors can put on their silliest or scariest costume and strut down the center’s runway for a monstrously good time. Enjoy a mocktail, treats and of course, a costumed fashion show.

The center is partnering with Cobb County Police Department to learn how stay aware of one’s surroundings and focus on safety.FOSWC Bingo from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Oct. 16. Cost $5. Friends of Senior Wellness Center is holding their monthly bingo. Fee includes cards, markers, and snacks. Support the center while having a fun time. Fundraiser to benefit the center.Holiday Series: Fall Centerpiece Class from 10 a.m. to noon on Oct. 17. Price Pending. Bring own supplies. It’s that time of year, to gear up for the visitors from far and near. Create a beautiful table for all to see, so one can spread happiness and glee. In this class seniors will create a festive adornment, just think of it like a table ornament.SHIP Medicare Counseling from 10 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. by appointment only on Oct. 17. SHIP is a public-private partnership, administered by the Georgia Department of Human Services Division of Aging Services. SHIP provides free, unbiased information and assistance to Medicare beneficiaries and their caregivers with health and drug plans. A SHIP counselor will be onsite at our center. First, second and third prize winners will be decided according to public vote and winners will receive small prizes. Winners will be announced Oct. 28 at 10 a.m. Paint and embellishments provided.Frankenstein Trivia from 11 a.m. to noon on Oct. 23. Frankenstein believed that by creating the “Monster,” he could discover the secrets of life and death, create a new species and learn how to renew life.
