    PARKS maintenance updates

    Cobb PARKS announced the following maintenance updates:

    The Mountain View Aquatic Center is expected to reopen on Oct. 1. The center has been undergoing improvements including resurfacing the pool and painting the natatorium.The Big Shanty Park baseball fields, soccer fields and trails are expected to reopen Oct. 1 following a sewer line installation.The Ron Anderson Recreation Center’s gym area will be closed for renovations through Oct. 12 and the Fair Oaks Recreation Center’s gym area will be closed for renovations through Oct. 14. There will not be any open gym activities at either center during this time.The Terrell Mill Tennis Center’s four courts will be closed for 4 to 6 weeks for reconstruction beginning the week of Oct. 21.

    Enter photos in the PARKS contest

    While enjoying Cobb parks and activities, residents should take some photos for the "Fun in the Park" photo contest.

    Capture the fun of sports, nature, wildlife and anything else that shows why one enjoys spending time there. Residents can enter up to 10 of their best shots in the 20th annual contest. The competition is open to all photographers, amateur and pro.

    Lightning Run 5K/10K

    Lace up the running or walking shoes and join the Sandy Springs Education Force’s annual Lightning Run 5K/10K, an official Peachtree Qualifier, on Oct. 26.

    The 10K loops the 5K race course twice. The course begins and ends at 6100 Lake Forrest Drive in Sandy Springs.

    Each step will help boost educational programs for public school students in Sandy Springs. Competitors will enjoy a t-shirt, food and a swag bag of goodies. Register by Oct. 9 to guarantee a shirt in one’s size.

    All finishers will earn medals and the top three kids and adults in multiple categories will receive awards. There will also be a post-race party, a DJ, vendors with giveaways and drawings for prizes donated by local businesses.

    Reside With Pride bulk trash collection Sept. 30 - Oct. 4

    During Reside With Pride, the Public Works Department of the City of Powder Springs provides a special collection service to its sanitation customers residing within the city limits of Powder Springs.

    The city will collect one’s extra trash and bulk items on their regular trash collection day of the Reside With Pride week, Sept. 30 to Oct. 4, at no additional cost. Sanitation bills must be current and in good standing to participate. Items must be placed at the curb no later than 7 a.m. of one’s regular trash collection day. Due to the large volumes of trash this week, there will only be time for one pass down a street.

    Public Works workers will not unload items from truck beds, vehicle trunks or trailers.

    Appliances are limited to two per household. Appliances must also be free of liquids and food products. For the safety of children, doors also need to be removed. All larger items, including but not limited to, trampolines, swing sets, basketball goals, etc, must be disassembled.

    Reside With Pride is a service provided by the City of Powder Springs for residents within the city limits on city garbage service. Anyone caught bringing items into the city from outside the city limits will be subject to prosecution.

    Annual Cobb County Domestic Violence Vigil

    The Cobb County Domestic Violence Vigil is dedicated to honoring the victims of domestic violence in Georgia who lost their lives in 2023.

    This event, hosted by LiveSafe Resources in collaboration with law enforcement, aims to bring awareness and support to those affected by domestic violence. It will include guest speakers sharing stories and insights, opportunities for community support and resources, vocal performances by Linked UP Church and reading of names in memory of those lost.

    It will start at 6 p.m. and run through 7 p.m. on Oct. 2 at Glover Park on Marietta Square.

    Mableton Food Truck Friday

    Mableton Mayor Michael Owens and Cobb County Sheriff Craig Owens will host Mableton Food Truck Friday from 6 to 9 p.m. on Oct. 4 in the Mableton Town Square.

    Parking will be at Mableton Elementary School, 5220 Church Street SW in Mableton. Participants can bring a lawn chair or blanket to enjoy a variety of food trucks and live music. The lineup of food trucks include Tacos & Tequilas, Jamaican Treasure Jerk, Paradise Smoothie Juice Bar and McCoughtry’s Ice Cream Truck.

    Fall Book Sale

    The Cobb County Public Library's Fall Book Sale will be Oct. 4-6 at the Cobb County Civic Center in Marietta.

    There will be a massive selection of books, DVDs, magazines and more. Proceeds benefit the 15 library branches and bookmobile.

    Truck-A-Palooza 2024

    Truck-A-Palooza 2024 will be 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Oct. 5 at Town Center at Cobb mall, 400 Ernest W. Barrett Parkway NW in Kennesaw.

    From fire engines to police motorcycles, the mall's back parking lot near the food court will transform into a playground for both kids and adults. Participants can get up close and personal with massive machines like SWAT vehicles and steam shovels.

    All proceeds from Truck-A-Palooza will benefit the Cobb County Safety Village, helping fund vital educational safety programs for the community. Cost is $5 per person. A family pack is $20 for up to six people. Children under two are free. Tickets are available at the gate. Cash and credit cards accepted.

    Keep Power's Ferry beautiful

    Keep Cobb Beautiful is seeking volunteers for the Adopt-A-Mile fall event from 9 to 10:30 a.m. on Oct. 5 along Powers Ferry Road at Terrell Mill Road.

    Volunteers can enjoy complimentary refreshments at 8:30 a.m. at the Kroger fuel parking lot, 1310 Powers Ferry Road in Marietta.

    The Powers Ferry Corridor Alliance is hosting this bi-annual event, in conjunction with Keep Cobb Beautiful, and supported by Kroger and Take 5 Oil Change. All supplies and safety equipment will be provided. Participants under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult.

    Keep Cobb Beautiful’s Adopt-A-Mile program is a partnership that allows individuals and groups to improve the appearance of the community.

    Upcoming Senior Citizen Council of Cobb County events

    The Senior Citizen Council of Cobb County will have the following events:

    There will be a Community EXPO from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Oct. 5 at Campbell Middle School, 3295 Atlanta Road SE in Smyrna. It will feature approximately 70 local vendors including a special section geared to older adults.

    There will be an Elder Abuse briefing on Senior Safety by David Blake, a forensic specialist from the Division of Aging Services at the Georgia Department of Human Services, from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Oct. 10 at the Switzer Library, 266 Roswell Street in Marietta. Blake will give an overview on abuse and exploitation of vulnerable and at-risk adults. He will also speak about the laws relating to abuse and neglect and where to report suspected abuse.

    Safety Forum

    Jews & Allies of Georgia will have the “How to Protect Our Houses of Worship” Forum from 4 to 7 p.m. on Oct. 6 at the Chimney Springs Clubhouse, 2465 Hearthstone Circle in Marietta.

    The forum will have panelists that include a diverse group of elected officials, candidates and experts who fight against religious bias and advocate for the safety of religious institutions. The free event will be moderated by JoEllen Smith, Managing Director of Jews & Allies of Georgia, an interfaith group fighting anti-Semitism in Cobb County and Georgia.

    Community Chalk Competition Deadline is Oct. 7

    The Community Chalk Competition is a chance for local artists to create their own chalk art at the 11th annual Chalktoberfest and be considered for awards.

    The event will be Oct. 13 at West Park Square in Marietta. There are divisions for individual artists and for school teams.

    School teams can enter the Elementary School Division, Middle School Division or the High School Division. Non-school groups, such as scout troops, can also compete as teams as long as the group members' ages all qualify for the same division. First, second and third place will be awarded within each division.

    Individual artists qualify for the Adult Division, ages 18 and up; the Teen Division, ages 13-17; or the Youth Division, ages 9-12. First, second and third place will be awarded within each division.

    Pricing varies based on the division. The deadline to register is 11 p.m. on Oct. 7.

    Movie Night - Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween

    There will be an outdoor screening of Goosebumps 2, rated PG, at 6 p.m. on Oct. 11 at the Cobb Civic Center, 548 South Marietta Parkway SE in Marietta.

    The movie will start at 6 p.m. Please register one member of the family for this event. Registration is per car. Participants should keep their receipt. When one enters the park they will be directed to their designated parking area.

    The Food Truck Association of Georgia will provide food options available for purchase prior to the movie. No alcoholic beverages permitted.

    Taste of Acworth

    The Taste of Acworth will be 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Oct. 12.

    Participants can sample an array of diverse restaurants, which will be offering food samples from $1-$10.

    The City of Acworth partners with the Acworth Business Association and JRM Management to host this event on Main Street in downtown Acworth. This event benefits numerous local schools and charities in the community.

    There will also be over 150 booths from local restaurants and businesses, plus two live entertainment stages. Children can enjoy inflatables, quad bungees and challenging games in the kid zone.

    Admission is free. Parking will be available throughout town.

    Mable House Harvest Festival

    The Mable House Harvest Festival will be 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Oct. 12, sponsored by the Friends of the Mable House, at 5239 Floyd Road SW in Mableton.

    Participants can experience history with demonstrations and hands-on activities including blacksmithing, pickling, pottery, weaving, butter-churning, candle making, letter stamping and corn husk doll crafting. Tots will have a storytime and crafts at the Sweet Potato House.

    There will be games, a petting zoo and entertainers. Gardeners can pick up heirloom seeds and planting tips at a seed swap.

    Participants can bring a chair or blanket and listen to the sounds of End of the Line and Jerry G. White.

    Food will be available for purchase. Parking and entry are free.

    City of Acworth Fall Town Hall

    The City of Acworth Fall Town Hall with Mayor Tommy Allegood will be 6:30 to 8 p.m. on Oct. 22 at the Tanyard Creek Overlook at the Acworth Community Center.

    Participants can learn about upcoming and ongoing city projects. This event also allows the Acworth community to learn more about the city by engaging with department leaders who will be onsite to discuss their department’s roles within the city team.

    JamBOOree

    The Acworth Halloween JamBOOree will be 3 to 7 p.m. on Oct. 19 at Logan Farm Park, 4405 Cherokee Street in Acworth.

    The event is open to all families looking to have a spooky good time celebrating Halloween with lots of fun festivities. There will be music, games and a costume contest for all age groups.

    Cobb Fall Festival of Fun adds haunted house

    Cobb’s annual Fall Festival of Fun will be 5 to 9 p.m. on Oct. 26 at Jim R. Miller Park.

    Kids of all ages can hop on the whimsical hayride, strike a pose in the vignette photo booths with favorite characters, enjoy arts and crafts, explore handcrafted goods and take in performances. Participants also get chills down their spine at the new haunted house. Entry to the festival and haunted house are free and parking is free.

    Cobb PARKS' Haunted House will be open from 5 to 9 p.m. from Oct. 23-26.

    Safe-O-Ween

    Safe-O-Ween will be 3 to 5 p.m. on Oct. 31 at the Acworth Police Department, 4440 Acworth Industrial Drive NW in Acworth.

    Participants can bring their elementary-aged children to the Acworth Police Department for an afternoon of Halloween fun and free candy.

    Acworth Beer and Wine Festival

    The annual Acworth Beer & Wine Festival will take place on Nov. 2 at Logan Farm Park, 4405 Cherokee Street in Acworth.

    Participants can enjoy over 100 craft beers, wine, live music and food. The event is for people ages 21 and older. No kids or pets will be allowed.

    Sugar Plum Pop-up Market
