    Cool down at Cobb shelters

    Hope House Cooling Center, 1297 Bells Ferry Road in Marietta is open in anticipation of the elevated temperature over the next several days. It will open from noon to 6:30 p.m. daily through July 10. Clients will receive lunch and dinner before their departure. For more information, visit https://tinyurl.com/ye523xbj .

    Run, walk or stroll in 5k

    Residents can go on a 5K run, walk or stroller roll with It Starts With Me 2 Foundation at 8 a.m. on July 13 at the Riverside EpiCenter, 135 Riverside Parkway in Austell.

    The 5K Stroller Roll is a community hub offering valuable resources and support. Several vendors will be on-site, including IV Therapy, the Department of Public Health providing free health screenings, Emory University offering free vision screenings and Colgate Bright Smiles with free dental screenings.

    Community resiliency training

    The Cobb Collaborative will lead a free three-hour community training on the Community Resiliency Model from 1 to 4 p.m. on July 15 at the North Cobb Library, 3535 Old 41 Highway NW in Kennesaw.

    CRM introduces a set of wellness skills designed to help adults and children learn to track their nervous systems to bring the body, mind and spirit back into greater balance. It also encourages people to pass the skills along to family, friends and their wider community.

    Parking information for Marietta’s Fourth in the Park

    The City of Marietta provided the following information on parking options for attendees to Marietta’s Fourth in the Park celebration on July 4.

    City of Marietta free parking options are Marietta City Hall, 205 Lawrence Street; Marietta Community Development, 268 Lawrence Street; and Marietta Housing Authority, 95 Cole Street.

    The Cobb County Government Parking Decks, accessed from Waddell Street, require a parking fee.

    Marietta to hold grand opening for new Fire Training Tower

    The City of Marietta will host a grand opening of the new Marietta Fire Training Tower with a fire hose uncoupling ceremony from 4 to 6 p.m. on July 10 at 850 Sawyer Road in Marietta.

    The event will open with tours of the new facility and light refreshments starting at 4 p.m. The official ceremony will begin promptly at 5 p.m.

    The Marietta Fire Training Tower is the latest addition to the Marietta Public Safety Training Center. The five-story, multifaceted tower is designed to simulate fire scenarios, allowing firefighters to hone their skills for residential and commercial environments. With this addition, Marietta firefighters can complete all required training at the location and within the city rather than traveling to outside agencies.

    July is National Parks & Recreation Month

    Take part in the National Parks & Recreation Month Marietta Celebration from 4 to 8 p.m. on July 19 at Tumlin Park, 400 Chestnut Hill in Marietta.

    Marietta Parks, Recreation & Facilities will have an evening of games and music from Jason Garner, Hot Candy Rocks and Ian McConnell.

    Temporary exhibit at the Marietta History Center

    The Marietta History Center, 1 Depot Street in Marietta, continues to host traveling exhibits from Kennesaw State University’s Museum of History and Holocaust Education.

    Now through July 27, the Center will exhibit “Black + Jewish: Connection, Courage, Community,” a 10-panel traveling exhibit that explores the history of Black and Jewish relationships in the U.S. This exhibit is from the Museum of History and Holocaust Education at KSU who received a grant from the Breman Foundation of Atlanta to create a traveling exhibit in support of its 2021 goals of combating antisemitism, addressing race relations and working for social justice. During spring semester 2021, public history students in HIST 4427 worked with MHHE curator Adina Langer to produce the exhibit.

    Cost is $10 adults, $7 seniors/students and free for children under 5 and those with a Military ID. All temporary exhibits are included with regular admission.

    Pop-In at the Marietta History Center

    The Marietta History Center, 1 Depot Street in Marietta, will have their monthly Pop-In event from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on July 20.

    Held on the third Saturday of every month, Pop-Ins offer an opportunity for children and their families to engage with the Center through themed activities and crafts. This month, the focus is on the different cultures in Cobb County.

    The schedule of events are the Cobb Bookmobile from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Georgia House Rabbits Society touchable rabbits from noon to 2 p.m. and Bach 2 Rock will have a free music class at 11:45 a.m., followed by a performance in Atherton Square.

    Shakespeare for “Very Young” Audience is July 10

    Atlanta’s Shakespeare Academy presents Tempest, Junior!, a 45-minute version of the comedy appropriate for children ages 4-7, at 7 p.m. on July 10 at the Sewell Mill Library & Cultural Center, 2051 Lower Roswell Road in Marietta.

    The free Theatre for the Very Young production in the Sewell Mill Black Box Theatre will feature audience engagement while introducing Shakespeare language and characters to kids. The cast is four professional actors and puppets.

    Opioid Abatement Advisory Council meeting

    The Opioid Abatement Advisory Council will meet in the Cobb & Douglas Public Health Boardroom, Building A, 1650 County Services Parkway in Marietta at 2 p.m. on July 24 and 2 p.m. on Aug. 28.

    R.A.D. Women's Self-Defense

    The Marietta Police Department will offer a 12-hour Rape Aggression Defense class.

    R.A.D. is a simple yet effective self-defense course for women only. The techniques are designed to be quick and effective in delivering pain to vulnerable locations on the attacker’s body. The course is designed so that women of all fitness levels and ages will successfully learn options to escape attacks.

    R.A.D. is a 12-hour course, delivered in four classes that are three-hours long. Participation in all four classes is necessary to complete the course. This class is open for women ages 14 and above. Ages 14-16 may attend if a female guardian also attends. Cost is $15. Space is limited.

    Classes are 6 to 9 p.m. on July 15, July 17, July 22 and July 24 at the Marietta Police Department, 240 Lemon Street in Marietta.

    Senior markets provide fresh produce

    Seniors over 60 can get some food relief starting in July.

    Cobb County Senior Services is hosting farmers markets around the county for qualifying seniors who will receive $50 on a market benefit card for produce. One voucher per household per summer. Space is limited. Reserve a market benefit card at 770-528-1060.

    Market and Resource Fairs

    Residents can get free products, food, resources and services at the Cobb and Douglas Public Health Farmers Market and Resource Fairs in July and August.

    There will be fresh, locally grown fruits, vegetables and herbs. Markets are open to the entire community. WIC participants should bring a WIC ID to receive $30 free per eligible WIC participant per season. Events run 8 a.m. to noon at two locations: July 10, July 24, Aug. 7 and Aug. 21 at 1738 County Services Parkway in Marietta; and July 16, July 30, Aug. 13 and Aug. 27 at 875 Riverside Parkway in Austell.

    Keep Cobb Beautiful upcoming events

    Volunteer, recycle and create at Keep Cobb Beautiful events this summer.

    Ride around with Keep Cobb Beautiful and help identify areas in communities that can benefit from beautification and restoration using the Litter Index Survey from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on July 11 at Jim R. Miller Event Center, 2245 Callaway Road SW in Marietta. Breakfast will be provided.     Europa Clipper

    The Sewell Mill Library & Cultural Center, 2051 Lower Roswell Road in Marietta, will have Europa Clipper on July 2 from 6:30 to 8 p.m.

    Stand by for Earth's first mission to conduct a detailed science investigation of Jupiter's moon Europa, where scientists predict a vast salty ocean lies beneath its icy crust, possibly holding the building blocks necessary to sustain life.

    Cobb County libraries closed on July 4

    All Cobb County Public Libraries will be closed and not offer curbside hold pickup on July 4 in honor of Independence Day.

    Normal hours will resume on July 5. Digital resources are available every day. Residents can visit https://www.cobbcounty.org/library/research to find eBooks, eAudiobooks, digital magazines, comics, streaming video and hundreds of other databases and resources in dozens of topics.

    Kennesaw’s Back 2 School Jam

    Kennesaw’s Back 2 School Jam will be 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on July 13 at the Kennesaw Recreation Center.

    This is the second annual event, organized by the City of Kennesaw’s Parks and Recreation Department. Kids will receive school supplies and book bags on a first-come, first-served basis. Vendors will be on-site offering giveaways and information about community resources and services for families and children. Admission is free.

    Kennesaw Hoops will also host a Free Throw and 3-Point Contest with a $2 entry fee per person. Participants can register up to the day of the contests, before 11 a.m. for the Free Throw contest and before noon for the 3-Point contest. Registration for the Kennesaw Hoops Youth League will be available on-site, with a 10% discount for registrants.

    Family Fun Safety Day

    The Family Fun Safety Day will be from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on July 15 at the Cobb County Safety Village, 1220 Al Bishop Drive in Marietta.

    The event is the last Family Fun Day this summer. Kids can wear a firefighter hat, hop in a squad car and see other emergency vehicles up close. There will be puppet shows, a tour of Sparky's house to learn about fire hazards and various safety games.

    Cost $5 per person, with a maximum cost of $20 per family. No registration is required. The event will be held rain or shine.

    Cobb 101

    Residents can learn more about Cobb County Government in Cobb 101, The Citizen’s Government Academy.

    The 11-week course offers an in-depth look at the many facets of county government. Sessions will be held at different government buildings, offering participants a firsthand look at how the government serves its residents.

    The class is limited to 32 Cobb residents or business owners who are at least 18 years old. Applications are available online through July 24. Tentative start date is Aug. 8.
