MARINETTE — Marinette alderperson Liz Mikutowski is seeking reelection to her 5th Ward seat.

She was first elected in 2021 and she said she wants to continue to represent and advocate for the residents of her ward and help with decisions good for the entire community.

“I have been a strong voice on the City Council, asking for more investment in our local streets as well as pushing for bike and pedestrian access each time a street project has been discussed,” she said. “I worked with the administration to bring the property between Menard’s and two hotels into compliance with our ordinances. This area is now cleaned up and the animals successfully rehomed.”

Mikutowski served on the Park and Recreation Committee where she strongly advocated for a revision of the city’s Outdoor Recreation Plan prior to its expiration. Visitor safety, ADA compliance and maintenance of all parks were a priority in her work on the committee. She advocated for specific plans for the Duer Gym, Division Street Park, Red Arrow Park, as well as Daggett Park and Higley Field, which is in Ward 5.

As a member of the M&M Pickleball Association she worked on the fundraising committee for the Higley Field Court Renovation project to fully fund the renovation at no cost to the taxpayers.

Mikutowski says she has great concern for the stewardship of Marinette’s parks and waterways which include the banks of the Menominee River and the Bay of Green Bay. She has highlighted the need to provide more trash and recycling containers as well as positive messaging to remind residents and visitors to “Leave no Trace.”

She is a member of the Transportation Committee and believes the increase in the Shared Ride Taxi rates were unjustified.

“The committee was informed it was necessary to increase the rates due to a ‘revenue shortfall,’” she said. “It was implied that the entire program was in jeopardy. The committee did not have accurate information. As a result, the most vulnerable members of our community — the elderly, disabled and those without transportation — now have the highest shared ride taxi rates in the state.” Mikutowski said she was shocked when she learned that there was no revenue shortfall and the vote to raise the rates was not necessary. She said she will work for reconsideration of the rate hike with goal of lowering the rate.

Mikutowski wants to see our civic leaders continue to improve communication between residents and city government by advocating city council/committee meetings are livestreamed, recorded and posted on the city website. Many residents have expressed disappointment in their ability to attend these public meetings in person due to other work/family/school obligations.

Mikutowski strongly supports revitalizing Main Street/Menekaunee business districts into welcoming destinations for our residents, tourists and boaters, and says it is of utmost importance to make certain our tax dollars are well-spent and benefit residents first. “Development comes to communities that show pride, look great, are safety conscious, and offer opportunities for family recreation,” she said.

Raised in Marinette,Mikutowski attended public schools graduating from Marinette High School. After college, she and her husband returned to Marinette in 1983, founding Mikutowski Woodworking.

During that time, they raised two children and were active in the local Marinette PTO’s, sports, scouting, community and church.

She is a member of Peace United Church of Christ where she taught Sunday school and is currently Vice President of the Church Council. Her community involvement includes membership in M & M Pickleball, PEO Chapter Q, and the GFWC (Woman’s Club) Menominee, where she is currently a liaison for the MMYMCA with the Health and Wellness Committee. She also teaches fitness classes at the MMYMCA.

Mikutowski believes that civic pride starts with each of us, working together with all of members of our community.
