    Marine boys capture third at 'Purple Power' Invitational

    MARINETTE — The Marinette High School track and field team hosted the second Purple Power Invitational at Higley Stadium on Thursday.

    The Marines played host to squads from Kewaunee, Gladstone, Green Bay West and Suring.

    Kewaunee won both the boys and girls competitions while the Marinette boys and girls placed third and fifth, respectively.

    The Marine boys were led by a strong performance from their sprinters.

    Mason Hofherr out-leaned Gladstone’s Nate Young at the line to take the 100m dash with a personal record time of 11.68 seconds, just a breath ahead of Young’s 11.69.

    Braxton Polzin was fourth for the Marines at 12.11 seconds.

    Luke Adams took the win at the 200m distance with a PR of 25.15 seconds, while Javon Brown was fifth at 26.01 seconds.

    Nicholas Hruska notched a top-five finish in the 400m at 59.86 seconds, and Jackson Draheim placed third in the 800m run at 2:15.96.

    Polzin, Adams and Hofherr were joined by Elijah Wimbush to win the 4x200m relay at 1:36.04. The same group took second in the 4x100m relay at 46.43 seconds.

    Hruska and Wimbush teamed with Draheim and Hunter Schneider for a runner-up finish in the 4x400m relay at 3:57.10.

    Schneider also placed fourth in the 1600m run at 5:24.86 while Evan Reines was sixth with a time of 5:43.75.

    Draheim, Reines and Mason Floriano finished second, third and fifth respectively in the pole vault. Draheim cleared 11’-6 while Reines topped 11’-0 and Floriano vaulted 9’-0.

    Frankie Marquardt paced the Marinette throwers with a fourth-place toss of 110-05 in the discus and a sixth-place heave of 40-02 in the shot put.

    For the second meet in a row, the Marinette girls got a 1600m win from Anna Marzhal. The freshman completed the mile in 6:19.11 while Madison Kunick placed fourth at 6:27.63.

    Jaydn Sherwood took third in both the discus (81-01) and the shot put (27-00).

    Bailey Krouth took third in the 200m dash with a time of 29.17 seconds, and Keristen Kabacinski made the 100m finals where she finished fifth at 14.43 seconds.

    Up NextThe Marinette track and field team will travel to Wrightstown on Tuesday for a North Eastern Conference meet. Action is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
