MARINETTE — Bay Cities bragging rights belong to the Marinette girls soccer team after the Marines handed Peshtigo its first loss of the season with a 2-0 victory on Saturday.

Peshtigo falls to 7-1-3 overall while Marinette improves to 8-3-1.

Neither school was able to break through offensively as defense ruled the first half, with Lady Bulldog goalie Lucy Lemire and Marinette keeper Lacy Carviou both pitching shutouts in the net.

The first points of the morning did not come until over 10 minutes into the second half, when the Marines executed a textbook corner kick from Josie Smerchek to Sierra Schreiner to take a 1-0 lead with 28:19 left to play.

Schreiner put Marinette ahead 2-0 nine minutes later with a penalty kick, and the Marines’ defense did the rest, holding the Lady Bulldogs scoreless over the final 19:33 to seal the deal.

“We’re missing Bry Torkko today, so Josie had to move to the back, which shuffled around our offense a bit,” Marinette coach Allyson Price said. “Audra (Bauman) has been Peshtigo’s bigger scorer, and Peyton Gamelin did not let her get many shots.”

Lemire faced 10 shots and stopped eight of them, while Carivou collected three saves in the net.

For Marinette, Saturday’s contest was simply a matter of the Marines continuing their winning ways after thrashing Clintonville 17-1 in North Eastern Conference play on Thursday.

Six different Marines found the net against Clintonville. Chloe Seymour led the way with four goals, while Schreiner and Smerchek both tallied hat tricks.

Torkko and Kylie Kunick pumped in two goals apiece, while Gamelin, Jada Jones and Serenity VanPool all scored once.

Schreiner added three assists, with Seymour and Smerchek both pitching in one of their own.

“The biggest thing was that the girls were unselfish,” Price said of Thursday’s game against the Truckers. “We had six different players score, and that’s because our bigger scorers in Chloe, Sierra and Josie made sure that other people were able to get shots off.”

Carviou and VanPool both recorded a save on Thursday.
