Miscues costly for Marinette girls against FVL

MARINETTE — The Marinette High School softball team suffered a 7-2 loss to Fox Valley Lutheran in North Eastern Conference play on Monday.

The Marines fell to 6-11 overall and 6-10 in conference play, while the Foxes solidified their position of fourth in the NEC standings at 11-6 in league play (17-6 overall).

Marinette was one defensive play shy of winning a well-pitched game.

Wynn Erdman surrendered an unearned run in the second inning. Then in the fifth inning, another defensive miscue left the door open to a six-run frame that extended Fox Valley’s lead to 7-0.

Marinette came back with two runs in the bottom of the fifth, but could get no closer.

Fox Valley’s Brooklyn Blob allowed two runs, one earned, on four hits to pick up the win. Blob walked five and struck out eight in a complete-game effort.

Erdman allowed no earned run while tossing all seven innings. She surrendered eight hits and two walks while striking out six.

Peyton VanPool led the Marine offense with a pair of hits including a double in three at bats.

Georgieanna Grandaw went 1-for-2 with a run scored, and Erdman went 1-for-4 at the plate.

On DeckMarinette traveled to Freedom on Tuesday. The Irish are currently second in the NEC standings at 14-2. They are rated fifth in the State (WIAA Division 2) with an overall record of 17-6. Results were unavailable at press time.

The Marines are at home today (Wednesday) against Luxemburg-Casco at 3:30 p.m., before hosting Two Rivers in the opening round of the WIAA Division 2 Regional playoffs on Thursday at 4:30 p.m. The winner of Thursday’s game will face Luxemburg-Casco in the Regional semifinals on May 21.
