    2024-05-14

OCONTO FALLS, Wis. — The Marinette High School baseball team earned a split in a North Eastern Conference doubleheader at Oconto Falls on Saturday.

The Marines took game one 6-2 before the Panthers responded with a 5-1 win in game two.

Justin Kruse held the Panthers bats in check in game one, allowing only a two-run double from Easton Engel in the third inning.

The Marinette bats came to life in the late innings, plating a run in the fifth, three more in the sixth and two in the seventh inning.

Weston Hanson put up a big game in the middle of the Marinette order, going 2-for-4 with a double, a stolen base and two runs batted in.

Sam Sommerfeldt added a pair of hits in three at bats, and Wyatt Straus went 1-for-4 with a double and a run scored.

Kruse tossed all seven innings, allowing two runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out six.

In game two, a trio of Panther hurlers combined to limit Marinette to just four hits.

Jack Adler, Trace Brehmer and Cole Bozile issued eight walks to Marinette hitters but pitched around trouble by giving up only four hits.

The Marines got a run in the first against Adler but could not crack the scoreboard again.

This time the Oconto Falls offense came alive late, scoring all five of their runs after the third inning.

Adler picked up the win with five innings of work. He allowed one run on three hits and four walks while striking out five.

Sommerfeldt took the loss, allowing two runs on three hits in one inning of relief work.

Ethan Doubek started the contest and pitched well, allowing one unearned run on three hits and two walks across four innings pitched.

Hanson turned in a second 2-for-4 performance, while Cooper Smith and Levi Hanson collected hits as well.

Marinette improved to 7-12 overall and 5-11 in NEC play. Oconto Falls moved to 8-10 overall and 7-9 in conference play.
