Marinette girls blanked in Regional semis by top-seeded Spartans

    2024-05-22

Luxemburg, Wis. — The Marinette High School Softball team bowed out of the WIAA Division 2 Playoffs with a Regional Semifinal loss to top-seeded Luxemburg-Casco on Tuesday.

The Marines gave the Spartans all they could handle before falling 4-0.

Luxemburg-Casco claimed the North Eastern Conference Championship this season with a conference record of 17-1. The Spartans are currently ranked second in the state after improving to 23-2 overall.

The Marines closed the season with an overall record of 7-14.

Senior pitcher Wynn Erdman performed well in the loss, avoiding major damage against a high-scoring Spartan offense.

She surrendered four runs, three earned, while scattering 10 hits and a walk and striking out five.

L-C stranded a pair of runners in the first inning.

With one out in the second, Erdman issued her only walk of the day to Maggie Hanmann, who came around to score the game’s first run on a single from Ana Vandermause.

The Spartans put together a two-out rally in the third, scoring two runs on four hits, and added a lone tally in the fifth to cap the scoring at 4-0.

Meanwhile, the Marines had their hands full trying to solve Erin Chervosky.

Chervosky allowed just four hits while striking out six.

Lauren Pelon collected Marinette’s first hit to put two on base with one out in the second inning, but Chervosky escaped unscathed with a popup and a strikeout.

That started a stretch of ten consecutive batters retired by Chervosky.

Georgieanna Grandaw and Barrett Cole finally snapped that streak with back-to-back singles in the fifth, but the Spartans again slammed the door with no damage done.

The Marines got runners to second base in both the sixth and seventh innings but could not push a run across.

Pelon went 2-for-3 on the day while Grandaw (1-3) and Cole (1-4) recorded Marinette’s remaining hits.
