Marinette splits Saturday series against Oshkosh

OSHKOSH, Wis. — The Marinette Legion baseball team hit the road for a Saturday doubleheader against Oshkosh on Saturday.

Oshkosh shut out Post 39 5-0 in the opening game but Marinette was able to bounce back with a 5-2 victory in the nightcap to salvage the split.

Marinette was held to just three hits and were only able to get six runners on base in game one, while Post 70 collected six base knocks, two of which were doubles.

Colin Nigl was responsible for one of those doubles, driving in a pair of runs in the third inning.

Oshkosh’s lead grew in the bottom of the fourth after a Marinette error allowed Evan Brandl to score before Shaun Gavin picked up an RBI to push Post 70 out to a 5-0 advantage.

Logan Marvin and Weston Hanson earned free passes in the top of the fifth and sixth innings, respectively, but Marinette was unable to advance either runner on both occasions.

Marinette launched a final comeback bid in the top of the seventh after Marvin got on base thanks to a two-out single before moving into scoring position on a walk issued to Braeden Huston, but Jackson Schramm went down on strikes for the third out as Oshkosh emerged victorious.

Oshkosh jumped out to an early lead in game two after Logan Kurth was called for a balk, which allowed Alex Dual to score.

Post 39 answered back with a three-run third inning that saw Maverick Williamson score on a passed ball before back-to-back RBIs from Kurth and Landon Corwin allowed Huston and Hanson to cross home plate.

An RBI-single off Marvin’s bat brought home Kurth and made it a 4-1 contest in favor of Marinette in the fifth inning.

Kolton Goldsmith led off Marinette’s half of the sixth with a triple and scored off a single by Hanson for Post 39’s final run of the afternoon.

Oshkosh scratched a run across in the bottom of the seventh thanks to a solo home run by Gavin, but Hanson was able to get Dual to fly out to center field for the second out before setting down Fisher Mackenzie on strikes to preserve the win for Marinette.

Post 39 out-hit Oshkosh by a 9-3 margin in game two.
