MARION, Ind. — An Indy man is recovering after being shot and critically injured in Marion early Monday morning.

According to a Marion Police Department release, an officer overheard several gunshots while patrolling the area of 26th and Home Avenue around 3:58 a.m. As the officer approached to investigate, MPD said he heard three more shots ring out from the 900 block of East 27th Street.

At this time, the officer reportedly witnessed an unidentified male fire three more shots before running into a residence in the area.

MPD confirmed that Grant County Central Dispatch had already received multiple calls reporting that gunshots had been heard in the area.

The residence the male entered was soon surrounded by MPD officers and its SWAT team alongside deputies with the Grant County Sheriff’s Office.

Around this same time, dispatch received a call from McClure gas station located at 2915 S. Adams Street reporting that a man identified as 34-year-old Marcus Highbaugh of Indianapolis had entered the store with a gunshot wound and requested assistance before falling at the front door.

Authorities quickly arrived at the gas station and located Highbaugh suffering from a gunshot wound to the back. He was transported by emergency medical personnel to Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne in critical condition.

A witness reportedly told officers that they were with Highbaugh before the shooting occurred as the pair had been searching for a female’s residence in the area. MPD added that a bullet appeared to strike the back side of the vehicle before critically injuring Highbaugh.

Officers soon obtained a search warrant to enter the residence where detectives found the following:

    • Five pounds of marijuana
    • A “large amount” of Psilocybin Mushrooms, the exact quantity was not provided
    • Three AR15-style rifles
    • Two shotguns
    • A .22 rifle
    • Two 9mm handguns

MPD has not confirmed if any arrests have been made in connection to the shooting or seizure of firearms and narcotics. Anyone with information related to the incident is asked to contact MPD at 765-662-8477.
