Kids invited to audition for 'The Lion King Jr.' at the Palace Theatre

Marion Palace Theatre will hold open auditions at 1 p.m. Aug. 18 for the Junior Palace Production of "The Lion King Jr.," a stage adaptation of Disney's beloved animated classic.

The production is scheduled for performances in October.

"The Lion King Jr." tells the story of the adventures of a curious cub named Simba as he struggles to accept the responsibilities of adulthood and his destiny as king. Along the way, the young lion encounters a colorful cast of characters including spunky lioness Nala, charismatic meerkat Timon and loveable warthog Pumbaa.

To claim his place on the throne and save his beloved Pridelands, Simba must find his inner strength and confront his wicked Uncle Scar.

"The Lion King Jr." features songs from the 1994 film as well as additional songs written for the Broadway production.

Director Kristi Wink and her team invite boys and girls ages 8 and older to audition. Those auditioning should attend dressed in casual clothing and shoes suitable for choreography. People who are interested in chorus roles will participate in group dance and singing exercises. Individuals auditioning for principal roles should prepare a one-minute solo song (not from the show) and be ready to read from the script. A pianist will be provided; no CDs.

A "family-friendly" rehearsal schedule will be held 4:30-6:30 p.m. Monday-Thursday leading up to the performance dates, which are Oct. 4-6 on the Palace Theatre’s main stage.
