Deaf prisoners in TN lacked interpreters, videophones in violation of ADA, judge rules
A federal judge this week ruled that Tennessee prisons violated the Americans with Disabilities Act and an anti-discrimination law by failing to provide sign language interpreters and videophones to a group of deaf prisoners who sued the Tennessee Department of Correction. Under the ADA, deaf prisoners have the right to accommodations that provide communication that is as effective as communication for prisoners without disabilities. Man arrested after pursuit in Wythe/Smyth counties
Smyth County deputies arrested Wesley Adam Keesee of Shenandoah, Va., was arrested and transported to the Abingdon Regional Jail following a pursuit on a stolen sport bike. The Wythe County Sheriff’s Office initiated the pursuit and then Smyth County units and Virginia State Police (VSP) became involved when the pursuit made its way to Interstate 81. The pursuit continued to Duncan Road in Smyth County, where Keesee became cornered at the end of a driveway and was arrested. Keesee was wanted in Page County, Va., with felony drug-related warrants. Multiple new charges have been added to Keesee’s rap sheet including trespassing, felony evading, and other related charges.
