Needham community pool closed after glass bottle shatters
NEEDHAM - Relentless heat adds insult to injury in Needham, where crews are working quickly to fix a frustrating issue at the Rosemary Recreation Complex. The "deep pool" for lap swimming is closed after a glass bottle shattered and pieces fell in. "While I'm always concerned about people stepping on things and hurting themselves, that's not my biggest concern with glass. Shards of glass can float and therefore can go in peoples' eyes if they're not wearing goggles or they can get swallowed," explained Parks and Recreation Director Stacey Mulroy. So now, just a month after it opened for the...

The head of the Cambridge Housing Authority is pushing back against allegations of poor conditions and unfair evictions made by a group of tenants at two large family developments. But executive director Michael Johnston also said the authority will strengthen its response to mouse infestation at Washington Elms and Newtowne Court after listening to tenants at two public meetings that CHA called to hear from residents after the tenant group interrupted a board meeting June 12 with a petition demanding changes.

Vermonters with flood-damaged homes face tough recovery process: 'We have a lot of work ahead of us'

Vermont governor urges residents to report flood damage to the state for FEMA determination
Vermont’s governor on Tuesday urged residents to report any damage from last week’s flooding to the state, even if they plan to do repairs themselves, so that counties can meet the threshold for individual federal assistance. The flooding from the remnants of Hurricane Beryl damaged homes, knocked out bridges, caused landslides and washed out roads, leaving some people stranded. It happened a year to the day of last July’s catastrophic flooding that left some victims still awaiting home buyouts or repairs. Two people were killed by last week’s flooding, including a motorist in Lyndonville and a man who was riding an all-terrain vehicle in Peacham, authorities said. On Tuesday, a state official warned that severe thunderstorms could hit some of the flood-ravaged parts of the state in the afternoon and evening and bring high winds, limited flash flooding and power outages. “Vermont’s large rivers are still high but the predicted rainfall is not expected to cause them to exceed their banks or cause widespread flooding,” said Daniel Batsie, deputy public safety commissioner.

Approximately one or two minutes away from the area of Monson Street and Wisdom Way in Greenfield, multiple utility trucks could be seen addressing a downed tree that knocked out electrical wires. Kristin and Corriann Delaney, a mother and daughter who live just down the road from the tree fell, told Western Mass News that they have not had electricity and running water since around 9 p.m. Tuesday night. They did, however, have a small generator, which helped them and their dog get through the night.
