Monica Johnson and Brandolyn Jones have filed a lawsuit against Marlin Independent School District Superintendent Dr. Darryl Henson, accusing him of unfairly altering their children’s academic records. Johnson, the mother of Me’Kia Mouling (who graduated from Marlin High School in 2023 and now attends Texas A&M University), alleges that Henson’s modifications led to her daughter being tied for valedictorian. Jones, the mother of Praiyer and Addai Jones, claims that not only were her children’s grades changed, but also that one of her child’s long-time teachers was replaced with a deceased person, as reported by The Daily Mail.

Jones has removed her youngest child from school due to the alleged dishonest behavior, while Johnson’s son still attends Marlin High School. “We’re suing him, it’s harassment. Every day, I’m terrified of what he is going to do. I check weekly just so I can keep up with it — I don’t feel like I should have to do that,” she explained to KKXV. Johnson added that when her daughter Me’kia attended high school, Henson allegedly modified her grades just before graduation. Eventually, he changed her grades back, but it tied her with another student for valedictorian.

Johnson, whose son is still at Marlin High School, mentioned that his 2024 class ranking has significantly dropped from 13th to 24th. “I feel like he’s still retaliating against me because I am suing,” she told the outlet . “And not only is he retaliating, but now I feel like it’s harassment because my son still goes to school here.”

Both mothers filed a lawsuit against Henson at the beginning of the year, citing multiple claims, including First Amendment retaliation. Thry are suing for damages upwards of $1 million. This is not the first time the school district has faced controversy. In 2023, Henson announced that Marlin High School’s graduation ceremony was postponed due to most seniors not meeting the required grades and attendance. The ceremony was delayed to June to give students time to catch up and meet diploma requirements.
