Civil Rights Corps files lawsuit against Washington, D.C., Police for constitutional violations during November protest
Civil Rights Corps has filed a federal civil rights lawsuit on behalf of nine plaintiffs, alleging constitutional violations by law enforcement during a protest last November. The demonstration, held on Nov. 15 outside the Democratic National Committee headquarters in Washington, D.C., was organized to advocate for a ceasefire in Palestine.
UDC’s Kayleah Shelton Selected as 2024 HBCU White House Scholar
The University of the District of Columbia’s own Kayleah Shelton, a junior double-majoring in accounting and finance, has been named one of the 110 students selected as part of the 2024 class of HBCU White House Scholars. This program, part of the White House Initiative on Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), highlights exceptional students from HBCUs across the nation who demonstrate outstanding academic achievement, leadership skills and commitment to community service. This year marks the program’s 10th anniversary and includes students from 77 HBCUs, showcasing the diverse educational experiences found within these institutions.

D.C. police officer accidentally killed while retrieving gun from storm drain
A Washington, D.C., police officer died Wednesday after being shot when a gun he was trying to recover from a storm drain accidentally fired, officials said.The officer, Wayne David, was a member of the Metropolitan Police Department for more than 25 years, said Executive Assistant Chief Jeffery Carroll."Wayne is a true hero to the District of Columbia, and today he gave his life to serve the visitors and the residents here," Carroll said. "We will never forget that."Carroll said earlier Wednesday that officers saw someone get out of suspicious vehicle in the Northeast part of the city, take off on foot and jump onto Interstate 295. Officers saw the person throw a gun in a storm drain before fleeing on the back of a motorcycle, he said.Police were trying to get the gun out of the drain when it went off, striking the officer at least once, Carroll said. Police are searching for the suspect who placed the gun in the drain, he said.
