EVESHAM — Mikey Williams says he's well-known around his hometown of Marlton.

Mom, Brittany Williams, says people are always stopping him to compliment his hairstyle. The 7-year-old is known as the kid with the mullet. Or, thanks to his football coach, "Mikey Mullet."

    That's right, a mullet.

The 1980s hair trend has been on the rise in the past few years, and now Mikey Williams and his mullet are representing Marlton in the Kids Mullet Championship. Online voters made him the 32nd of 33 kids to move into the second round of competition.

The Kids Mullet Championship is part of the greater USA Mullet Championship.

This year, the competition is raising funds for a nonprofit organization Jared Allen's Homes for Wounded Warriors.

Brittany Williams said they had to enter to compete in May, and the contest didn't start until July. When prompted to pick a nickname for his hairdo, Mikey chose "chief," an homage to his football team's mascot.

But the hairstyle isn't new to this kid. He's been rocking it since the pandemic.

And, when asked why he chose this cut, Williams, full of confidence behind a shy demeanor, had a pretty candid answer: "It's cool."

    Fair enough.

His barbershop, Marlton's Creators Barber Studios on Route 70, may also give him a leg up on the "cool" scale. Eagles favorite Jalen Hurts is known to get his hair cut there by owner Nicholas Vendetti.

Mikey was sure to sport his green Hurts jersey after getting a fresh cut recently. He accessorized with his older brother's gold chain, unbeknownst to him, in typical younger-sibling fashion.

So, why should Willliams win the top prize of $5,000?

Well, he's certain he's got one of the longest mullets in the competition. And he's already got a plan on how he's going to spend his cash-prize winnings.

"I'm probably gonna buy Jordans and a PlayStation ... [and] the pencil bat," he said.

Yes, that would be Phillie Bryson Stott's No. 2 pencil bat that has been all the rage with young sluggers.

Round 2 of voting runs through July 30, before the top 25 in the 5-7 age category make it into the finals.

Supporters can cast their vote at the Mullet Champ website under the kids competition category. Voters can donate to Jared Allen's Homes for Wounded Warriors to increase their favorite mullet's score.

Winners will be announced Aug. 28.
