MARMET — During a stop at the Marmet Post Office to pick up a letter, Jack Miller was thinking about how he missed the way it used to be.

At 65, he’s lived in Marmet for 25 years, and he remembers when the post office had longer hours and workers who knew him by name. Now, he says there’s a lot of turnover, and he wishes the post office could keep employees.

Miller said he doesn’t envy public officials.

“It’s a tough job to have these days,” he said. “I wouldn’t want it.”

He knows they’re dealing with wars overseas and natural disasters increasing at home. But Miller, who has diabetes, thinks money spent overseas could be better spent on lowering prescription drug costs. He is retired and has a fixed income.

“It’s just like every time you go to a doctor, they change your medication,” he said. “You go to your pharmacy and you’re like, whoa, $300.”

He also feels for other seniors in that situation.

“I just feel there needs to be some kind of grasp on these pharmaceutical companies,” he said. “They make billions in profit every year. Well, why don’t you put some of that money down to support some of the people who can’t afford their medicine?”
