Celebration of Lake Superior held at Marquette Maritime Museum

MARQUETTE, Mich. (WJMN) — Once a year in the Upper Peninsula, communities come together for Lake Superior Day, a celebration of the water that defines the region.

At the Marquette Maritime Museum July 21, children and adults were present for the 6 ^th annual outdoor event, which also aims to educate people about the history, conservation and ecology of the largest Great Lake.

Booths by local environmental organizations and family-friendly activities make Lake Superior Day accessible to all. Hilary Billman, the Marquette Maritime Museum Director, says she encourages everyone to come.

“There’s all kinds of things you can learn about here to conserve and make Lake Superior stay the most beautiful lake,” says Billman.

Some of those things include invasive species, microplastics in the water and watershed. The Department of Natural Resources attends the event every year with a tank of sea lampreys, which have historically posed a major threat to the natural fish populations in Superior and the other Great Lakes.

Lake Superior Day, on the third Sunday of each July, is just one of the many annual events held on the grounds of the Marquette Maritime Museum, which is open Tuesday-Sunday from 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. For a complete list of those events, visit the museum’s website .
