The Marshall wrestling team’s season carries on. The Cardinals got the 2024 Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association (WIAA) state tournament off to a solid start on Saturday, Feb. 10 at Waterloo High School. Four Cardinals in all punched a ticket to the sectional round, headlined by one individual regional champion, one runner-up, and a pair of fourth place finishers.

Marshall couldn’t repeat as a team sectional qualifier after finishing as regional runner-up last season. The Cardinals finished ninth of the 13 teams in attendance with a total score of 81. Host Waterloo won the regional with a team score of 202.5 and will be joined at team sectionals by another Capitol Conference rival, Cambridge, which finished as runner-up with 172.

Senior Tucker Cobb led the charge for Marshall with a first place finish in the 132 lbs. bracket. State tournament success is nothing new for this standout Cardinal. This is his third career regional title, having already won one at 126 lbs. last year as well as at 106 lbs. as a freshman. He was also a regional runner-up at 120 lbs. as a sophomore.

This season, he entered as the top seed at 132 lbs. and muscled his way through the competition. He received a pair of byes to immediately reach the semifinals, where he pinned a Deerfield wrestler in 1:21. On to the championship match, Cobb again got it done in the first period as he pinned a Horicon wrestler in 1:56.

Junior Turner Cobb turned in Marshall’s second-best effort, finishing as runner-up in the 157 lbs. weight class. He entered the day as the No. 2 seed and pinned a Kenosha Christian Life wrestler in 37 seconds to open his day in the quarterfinals. He followed that with a pin win at 1:29 in the semifinals to face off against the top seed from Deerfield in the championship. The match went the distance, but Cobb eventually fell in a 5-0 decision. Down in the second place match, Cobb received a “no contest” win as he was up against the same wrestler he had already pinned in the semifinals.

A pair of seniors also kept their high school careers going with fourth place finishes. Miles Zimmerman got it done in the 113 lbs. weight class. Following a pair of byes, Zimmerman fell via first period pin in the semifinals. He followed that with another loss to a Deerfield wrestler in the consolation bracket. Back against the wall, Zimmerman pinned a Living Word Lutheran wrestler in 2:00 to secure a spot at sectionals with his fourth place finish.

Kody Finke also placed fourth at 144 lbs.. After an opening bye, he pinned a Deerfield wrestler in 3:13 in the quarterfinals. Up next was the top seed and eventual regional champion from Hustisford in the semifinals. Finke battled but fell in a 6-2 decision. He followed that with a loss in the consolation bracket to drop to the fourth place match. There, he was up against the same Deerfield wrestler he had already pinned, awarding him a “no contest” win and fourth place.

Elsewhere at Saturday’s regional, fresgnan Trevor Rasmussen (285 lbs.) placed sixth while freshmen Dylan Peterson (190 lbs.) and Chase Stuntebeck (150 lbs.) did not place.

Qualified Marshall individuals now advance to the sectional round of the state tournament. The four Cardinals will head to WIAA sectional host Dodgeland High School on Saturday, Feb. 17.
