The Marshall track & field team has been red-hot this spring. It should come as no surprise that competing on home turf only furthered the Cardinals' dominance.

Marshall welcomed in Cambridge, Columbus, Deerfield, Lake Mills, Pardeeville, and Watertown Luther Prep on Wednesday, May 8 for the 2024 Dana Waddell Invitational. The Cardinals beat them all. The girls won their side with a team score of 164, followed by Columbus with 132 and Cambridge at 114. The boys also claimed the top spot with a score of 171, followed by Columbus at 144 and Lake Mills with 127.

In a day filled with successes, it was a historically great day for junior Brady Stensven. He set a new Marshall High School record in the triple jump with his leap of 45-0.75. As an added bonus, he also tied with junior teammate Daniel Nickel for first place in the high jump at 5'10". Nickel was also runner-up to Stensven in the triple jump with a distance of 38-8.

The boys' dominance was most felt in the relays. Marshall's guys took first place in the 4x100, 4x200, and 4x400 meter relays to go along with a third place finish in the 4x800. Additionally, senior Jaxon Hornby won the 3,200 meter run with a time of 10:36.12 and senior Tucker Cobb took first in the pole vault with a height of 12 feet flat.

The high-end finishes didn't end there. Junior Max Timpel placed fourth in the long jump with a distance of 18-6 and was runner-up in the 100 meter dash with a time of 11.63 seconds. Senior Caden Norquay placed second, as well, in the 300 meter hurdles with a time of 42.64 seconds. Sophomore Jackson Reichelt nabbed third place in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 17.65 seconds, as did senior Brayden Klubertanz in the 200 meter dash with a time of 24.36 seconds. Finally, senior Peyton Gundelach placed fourth in the shot put with a throw of 40-6.50.

As for the girls, senior Wynn Held had herself a very strong day. She took second place in the 100 meter, 200 meter, and 400 meter dashes. She ran a 13.64 second 100 meter, 28.23 second 200 meter, and 1:05.44 400 meter. Sophomore teammate Kiera Hellenbrand finished right behind her in the 400 with a time of 1:06.14.

Throwing events were a big hit for the Lady Cardinals as they took first in both. Freshman Summer Hellenbrand won the shot put with a throw of 31-7.5 while junior Alexandra Moreth's toss of 95-6 won her the discus event. Senior Paige Billig was a major contributor in both events, as well. She was runner up in the shot put (30-6.5) and placed third in the discus (93-0).

Elsewhere in the field, freshman Tori Justmann placed second in the high jump at 4'2", senior Lizet Lopez-Montes nabbed third in the pole vault at eight feet flat, and Summer Hellenbrand added another top end finish as she placed fourth in the long jump at 13-7.

Justmann's big day continued on the track as she took the top spot in the 1,600 meter run with a time of 5:56.11. The girls' 4x400 meter relay team also added a first place finish. Elsewhere, junior Emma Hellenbrand finished runner-up in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:32.31 and Lopez-Montes placed third in the 300 meter hurdles with a time of 53.42 seconds.

Up next, Marshall will cap off the week by participating in the Wisconsin Dells Invitational on Friday, May 10. This will serve as one final warm-up before the 2024 Capitol Conference meet, hosted at Lake Mills High School on Tuesday, May 14. Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association (WIAA) regionals, which will be hosted at Deerfield High School, will begin on Monday, May 20.
