    Cardinals compete at Capitol Conference meet

    The 2024 regular season came to a close for the Marshall track & field program on Tuesday, May 14. The Cardinals took the trip over to Lake Mills High School on that day for the Capitol Conference meet, where they fared well.

    The boys turned in the highest finish, placing fifth of the 10 teams in attendance with a team score of 48.5. The girls placed seventh with a score of 63. No Marshall athlete claimed an individual conference title.

    Lakeside Lutheran won conference for the boys with a team score of 188, followed by Lodi at 161 and Sugar River in third with 104. Lodi won for the girls at 132.5, narrowly outpacing Lakeside Lutheran with 126.5. Columbus rounded out the top three with 92 team points.

    While the Cardinals didn’t claim any individual titles, four of the girls finished as runners-up. First was senior Wynn Held, who placed second on the 100 meter dash with a time of 13.49 seconds. Junior Emma Hellenbrand also nabbed second in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:32.75.

    Also in the distance runs, freshman Tori Justmann placed second in the 1,600 meter run with a time of 5:50.26. These three then up to help the girls 4x400 meter relay team also place second. They were joined by sophomore Keira Hellenbrand to put up a time of 4:26.84.

    The girls’ high-end performances continued with two more third place finishes. Held showed up once again, achieving a height of eight feet flat on the pole vault for third place. Junior Alexandra Moreth also nabbed third in the discus throw with a distance of 106’7.

    Other notable performances for the girls include Lizet Lopez-Montes’ fourth place finish in the pole vault (7’6”), senior Paige Billig’s fourth place finish in the discus (104’), freshman Summer Hellenbran’s fifth place finish in the shot put (31’1), and the 4x200 meter relay team’s fifth place finish.

    As for the boys, Marshall’s best effort came in the 4x100 meter relay. Senior Brayden Klubertanz, juniors Fernando Campos and Max Timpel, and sophomore Carter Pettit teamed up for a time of 45.38 seconds. Junior Brady Stensven matched that effort in the triple jump, also placing third with a distance of 42’9.

    The field portion of the meet yielded many of the boys’ top results. Also in the triple jump, junior Lucas Christen nabbed sixth with a leap of 38’9.25. Senior Tucker Cobb picked up fourth in the pole vault (12 feet), junior Daniel Nickel placed fifth in the high jump (5’8”), and senior Peyton Gundelach nabbed sixth in the discus (126’11).

    On the track, Marshall’s boys earned a pair of individual fifth place finishes. Junior Max Timpel did it in the 100 meter dash with a time of 11.65 seconds, as did senior Jaxon Hornby in the 1,600 meter run with a time of 4:43.29. The relay teams also found success as the 4x200 meter relay team placed fourth while the 4x400 meter relay team earned fifth place.

    Next up for Marshall is the 2024 Wiscosnin Interscholastic Athletic Association (WIAA) state tournament. The Cardinals will compete in Regional 4C of Division 3 at Deerfield High School on Monday, May 20. Other teams in attendance will be Abundant Life Christian/Saint Ambrose, Cambridge, Catholic Central, Deerfield, Faith Christian, Johnson Creek, Madison Country Day, Palmyra-Eagle, Parkview, St. John’s Northwest, University Lake, Waterloo, and Wisconsin Deaf. Qualified teams and individuals will move on to sectionals, hosted at Horicon High School on Thursday, May 23.
