The Marshall baseball team has gone through the wringer in the last stretch of the 2024 regular season. The Cardinals have played a two-game series with Cambridge, the No. 16 ranked team in Division 3 according to the most recent Wisconsin Baseball Coaches Association (WIAA) coaches poll to go along with four non-conference road trips. They’ve lost them all.

The losing streak came on the heels of arguably Marshall’s best win of the regular season, 11-6 over Capitol — South runner-up New Glarus on the road on Monday, May 6. This was only one of three conference losses the Glarner Knights took this season.

Then came a trip to non-conference Poynette, a tight 5-4 loss on Thursday, May 9. Things snowballed from there. Marshall would then lose both games of a tournament at Edgerton on Saturday, May 11, 5-0 to Lake Mills and 8-7 to the host Crimson Tide. Then came the Cambridge series, a 6-1 loss on the road on Tuesday, May 14 and a home 13-0 loss on Thursday, May 16. Most recently, Marshall took to the road for a rematch with Lake Mills, a 12-7 loss.

This rough patch leaves the Cardinals with a 7-12 record this season. The pair of Cambridge losses also marked the end of Capitol — South conference play. Marshall ended up in fourth place in the final standings with an even 5-5 record. Cambridge used those two wins to propel to a conference title at 9-1.

Marshall still has one more chance to kick this losing streak before the end of the regular season. The Cardinals will hit the road to face Edgewood on Monday, May 20. This will be their final test before the onset of the 2024 Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association (WIAA) state tournament.
