For the second consecutive season, the Marshall High School boys have won a Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association (WIAA) track & field regional title. The Cardinals did so as one of 14 teams in attendance for Regional 4C of Division 3, hosted at Deerfield High School on Monday, May 20.

Marshall's boys tallied a total of 146 team points, outpacing Abundant Life Christian in second place with 119.5. Host Deerfield rounded out the top three with 108 team points. The Marshall girls were no slouches themselves, finishing third with 79 team points. Deerfield won for the girls with a team score of 124, followed by Abundant Life Christian with 85.

The boys utilized six individual regional championships to win as a team. The girls added one individual regional champion as well as a trio of runner-up finishes to make it an overall successful day for Marshall.

Juniors Max Timpel and Fernando Campos as well as sophomore Carter Pettit were all major scorers for the Marshall boys. Individually, Timpel won the 100 meter dash with a time of 11.74, followed closely by Pettit in second at 11.90 seconds. Timpel also punched a ticket to sectionals in the long jump with a leap of 19 flat for fourth place. Campos also nabbed third in the 200 meter dash with a time of 23.34 seconds.

The three teamed up to help the Cardinals win both the 4x100 and 4x200 meter relays. Senior Brayden Klubertanz was the fourth runner in both events. Together, they won the 4x1 with a time of 45.28 seconds and the 4x2 with a time of 1:35.17.

The Marshall boys also claimed a pair of individual regional titles in the field portion of the meet. Junior Brady Stensven won the triple jump with a distance of 41-7.75 while fellow junior Daniel Nickel leapt a height of 5'9" to win the high jump. Also in the field, senior Peyton Gundelach advanced to sectionals in the discus with his runner-up throw of 129-0.

Back on the track, it was a big day for senior Jaxon Hornby in the distance runs. He claimed a regional title in the 3,200 meter run with his time of 10:33.73 and finished in second place in the 1,600 meter run with a time of 4:49.37. The girls' lone individual regional title came courtesy of freshman Summer Hellenbrand. She won the shot put with a throw of 33-1. Junior teammate Alexandra Moreth also had a successful day of throwing, earning second in the discus with a toss of 102-0.

Senior Wynn Held turned in an impressive day with a pair of sectional qualifications. She finished as runner-up in both the 100 meter dash (13.42 seconds) and the pole vault (8'6"). Senior teammate Lizet Lopez-Montes will join her in sectionals in the pole vault thanks to her vault of eight feet flat for fourth place.

Rounding out the Marshall girls' sectional qualifiers, sophomore Keira Hellenbrand earned a spot in the 400 meter run with her time of 1:07.36 for fourth place. The 4x200 meter relay team also advanced. Held and Lopez-Montes were joined by senior Sydney Denniston and junior Ciara Dowdy to place fourth with a time of 1:55.85.

Qualified athletes will now head to Horicon High School on Thursday, May 23 for WIAA sectionals. The top three finishers in each event at sectionals will punch a ticket to the 2024 WIAA track & field state meet.
