Marshall Scholarship Foundation participated in the high school’s scholarship awards night on Wednesday 5/22/2024. Scholarships awarded totaled over $102,000 with $65,700 of those scholarships facilitated by Marshall Scholarship Foundation. Scholarships facilitated by Marshall Scholarship Foundation included Mary W. Stremmer Educational Trust Fund Scholarships and $24,000 worth of scholarships using donated funds and money from fundraisers. Mark your calendar for a big fundraiser at Barrel Inn on Saturday 11/2/2024.

Marshall Scholarship Foundation was founded 20 years ago and since then has awarded almost $636,000 in scholarship funds to almost 700 graduates of Marshall High School. Anyone interested in learning more about Marshall Scholarship Foundation is welcome to contact Bonnie Ernst, President at 608-655-4628 or PresidentMarshallSF@gmail.com. There were a few new or special scholarships awarded on this year’s scholarship awards night.

Alan Purvis Memorial Scholarship awarded $1,000 to Leonardo Rocha Sanchez. Alan Purvis was an active supporter of public education in the community of Marshall and a founding member of Marshall Scholarship Foundation. During his time as a resident, Alan helped lead efforts to approve the construction of three new school buildings within the Marshall School District. In 2002, he was recognized by the Wisconsin Education Association Council for his significant contributions to public education in the State of Wisconsin. After retirement, Alan enjoyed volunteering in his wife’s classroom and working as a substitute in the Marshall school district’s offices and libraries. Alan passed away in 2023.

Daniel Veith Memorial Scholarship awarded $1,000 to Grayson Armstrong. Daniel Scott Veith was a lifetime resident of Waterloo. One of his last wishes was to help fund the Marshall and Waterloo scholarship programs. Daniel always believed in the importance of helping others, to be kind to others, and to pay it forward when possible. Marshall Scholarship Foundation appreciates his generosity in supporting Marshall High School graduates.

Ponti Family Scholarship awarded $500 to Miles Zimmerman. Pete Ponti is a Marshall lifetime member of the VFW and a legion member for 30 plus years. He served in Vietnam 1967-1968. He works hard to promote the values and integrity of what it means to be a patriot. Pete’s proudest moment was his instrumental part he played in the design and Construction of the Marshall Veterans Memorial Park. He promotes patriotism in many programs at school to educate our youth. Pete’s pride is the display of the Red, White, and Blue.

Tyler Tweed Memorial Scholarship awarded $1,000 to Kody Finke. Tyler Tweed was a lifelong Marshall resident who passed away due to complications of Type I diabetes at age 24. Tyler was an Eagle Scout, worked as a diesel mechanic, and was known around town for his bright yellow 1990 Jeep Wrangler. He was always willing to lend a helping hand to friends and family. Tyler loved working with his hands, so his family wanted the scholarship in his memory to help a student with an interest in the trades.

Catherine Lazers Bauer Scholarship awarded $1,000 scholarships each to Nora Shelton and Miles Zimmerman. Catherine Lazers Bauer was born and raised in Marshall. Although she lived all over the US in her 90 plus years, Marshall was always home. She taught creative writing in several universities, had a column in the Denver newspaper and published a book called “One Day On Earth, A Third Eye View.” Catherine Lazers Bauer always felt that every person had a story to tell and her favorite activity was to help people put their own story into words. Many of her students were published. When Catherine passed away, her children thought it would be fitting to bring her love of the English language and her love of Marshall together. This year would have been Catherine’s 100th birthday. One of her daughters drove almost 1,700 from Arizona to attend the scholarship awards night in Marshall and present her mother’s scholarship.
