The Capitol conference was loaded with talent when it came to track & field this spring. Lakeside Lutheran won the boys' Division 2 Wisconsin Interschlastic Athletic Association (WIAA) team state championship while Lodi placed third. That made the 2024 Capitol Conference meet, hosted at Lake Mills High School on Tuesday, May 14, an absolute battle ground.

Still, Marshall athletes found a way to shine. Placing in the top two of any event there earned first team all-conference recognition, while third and fourth place was good for second team all-conference honors. Marshall popped up plenty, securing three first team and eight second team all-conference nods from the boys and girls combined.

Senior Wynn Held earned a pair of all-conference nods, both on the track and in the field. She was runner-up in the 100 meter dash with a time of 13.49 seconds, trailing only Wisconsin Heights junior Bryn Meyer at 13.19. Both earned first team all-conference status. Held was also a second team selection in the pole vault, where she placed third at a height of eight feet flat. Senior teammate Lizet Lopez-Montas also earned second team honors as she placed fourth with a height of seven and a half feet.

Joining Held on the first team was junior Emma Hellenbrand and freshman Tori Justmann. Hellenbrand finished as runner-up in the 800 meter run. Her time of 2:32.75 was right behind Lodi freshman Zoey Bahe, who won at 2:31.45. Both earned first team honors. Justmann also placed second in her event, the 1,600 meter run, with a time of 5:50.26. She only trailed Poynette junior Piper Johnson at 5:42.96.

Hellenbrand, Held, and Justmann all teamed up for another first team all-conference result, second place in the 4x400 meter relay. They were joined by sophomore Keira Hellenbrand, who ran the anchor leg. The four Lady Cardinals combined for a time of 4:26.84, barely behind Lakeside Lutheran's winning team of 4:25.06.

Rounding out Marshall's all-conference performances on the girls side, a pair of Cardinals had stellar days in the discus throw. Both junior Alexandra Moreth and senior Paige Billig made the second team, finishing third and fourth respectively. Moreth logged a throw of 106'7 while Billig wasn't far behind at 104'0.

As for the boys, Marshall earned four second team all-conference nods. Two came from the same group of Cardinals in the relays. Senior Brayden Klubertanz, juniors Fernando Campos and Max Timpel, and sophomore Carter Pettit teamed up to race both the 4x100 and 4x200 meter relays. They placed third in the 4x100 with a time of 45.38 seconds and fourth in the 4x200 with their time of 1:34.79.

Individually, senior Tucker Cobb pole vaulted his way to fourth place at a height of 12 feet flat. Perhaps the best show of the conference's strength came from the triple jump, though. Junior Brady Stensven, who would go on to place third at the WIAA state meet, landed on the second team in the Capitol Conference as his leap of 42'9 earned him third place.
