The Iowa Department of Veterans Affairs says the elimination of 11 positions and hour reduction of four others beginning August 15th is being done to help put staff in more direct care roles.
Members spoke with our team about the potential negative impact on veterans’ care
and the livelihoods of those dedicated caring employees.

“We must reaffirm our commitment to our veterans and ensure that the dedication of their care does not waver, especially in times of budget constraints, that we stand united in solidarity with our colleagues and our veterans and the community. Together, we make a difference. Let’s raise our voices and demand the care and respect, respect that our veterans deserve,” said Todd Coakley, President of AFSCME Council 61.

Many other residents, employees, and organizations supporting veterans spoke out against the cuts and called for Governor Kim Reynolds to fully fund the Iowa Veterans Home.
