MARSHFIELD − From food to carnival rides, animals and exhibits, the Marshfield Fair returns again next month.

The Marshfield Fair begins Friday, Aug. 16, and runs through Sunday, Aug. 25, from noon to 10 p.m. daily at the Marshfield Fairgrounds on Route 3A. The calendar of events is at Marshfieldfair.org.

The fair attracts between 130,000 and 150,000 visitors each year, depending on weather conditions.

How much do tickets cost for the Marshfield Fair?

Admission to the fair is $15 and free for children ages 6 and younger. Presale tickets for $12 are available until 11:59 p.m. Aug. 15 for sale online, by calling 781-834-6629 or at the administration office until 5 p.m.

The megapass costs $45 in advance, or $60 starting Aug. 16, and can be used for any one day of the fair. It covers admission and an unlimited mechanical ride wristband that is valid the entire day on the day of your choice.

Are there any specials or discounts for the Marshfield Fair?

    • Friday, Aug. 16 and 23, are Marshfield residents days, meaning residents can get in between noon and 6 p.m. for $8 with proof of residency.
    • Saturday, Aug. 17, is veterans day and any veteran or active-duty service member with proper identification will receive free admission.
    • Tuesday, Aug. 20, is senior citizen day with free admission for seniors.
    • 4-H and agricultural awareness day is Wednesday, Aug. 21. 4-H members who wear their Plymouth County 4-H T-shirt are admitted free.
    • Children’s day is Thursday, Aug 22, when children 12 and younger get in for free.

Are any special events planned for the Marshfield Fair?

Each day of the fair will be chock full of live music and entertainment, exhibits, demonstrations, rides and games.

While the full calendar of events is still in the works, the North River Blues Festival is scheduled for Aug. 24 and 25.

Celebrating its 28th year, the festival is the main music event at the Marshfield Fair. There are a dozen national and regional blues artists scheduled through the two days of the festival, including Blues Mob, The Rampage Trio and Brandon Santini.

Other performers who will be at the fair include magician Darren Yong, one-man circus Janoah Bailin and the living statue A Silent Soapbox.

What is the history of the fair?

The Marshfield Fair, one of the region’s only remaining fairs still primarily focused on agriculture, is celebrating its 157th anniversary this year. Farmers and ranchers from across the region each year bring their brightest flowers, largest vegetables and best-bred livestock to the fairgrounds to show off and compete.

The tradition started when 19 farmers came together in 1862 to found the South Marshfield Farmer’s Club. Three years later, the club held its first public meeting at which hundreds of farmers exhibited products from their farms.

The club ultimately formed a new society – the Marshfield Agricultural and Horticultural Society – which still operates the fair today.
