From paint colors and tile patterns to fixtures and décor, there are many ways to elevate your bathroom and make it feel brand new. But whether you're gearing up for a major bathroom renovation or have a few minor upgrades you've been meaning to make, it can be hard to decide what will work in your bathroom space. To help, Houzz surveyed 1,247 U.S. homeowners to get insight into their recent or planned bathroom renovation projects. The home improvement website used the data to find which bathroom upgrades are trending this year.

    Functionality

This year, homeowners are prioritizing functionality over form. According to Houzz, a desire to make the bathroom more accommodating has increased from 23 percent in 2023 to 27 percent in 2024.

    Minor Remodels

Minor bathroom remodels are becoming more popular than major renovations. In bathrooms that span 100 or more square feet, minor improvements have risen by 15 percent, while big bathroom upgrades have declined in popularity. Instead of increasing the shower size or modifying walls, homeowners have turned their attention to ceiling and floor modifications.

    Wet Rooms

Wet rooms, which typically have minimal to no enclosure separating the shower or tub from the rest of the bathroom, are growing in popularity. Houzz's data reveals that more than 13 percent of renovating homeowners characterize their primary bathroom as a wet room.

    Eclectic Style

While the top three primary bathroom styles—transitional, contemporary, and modern—haven't changed since last year, eclectic style is steadily growing in popularity. According to Houzz, this design style, which is all about personalization, is now as popular as farmhouse.

    White Fixtures

White reigns supreme when it comes to bathroom fixtures. For countertops, white and off-white are the go-to color options at 50 and 20 percent, respectively. In fact, Houzz found that white surpasses gray, another popular bathroom color, in all categories except for vanities

    Tile

Tile flooring is always a popular choice for bathrooms, but homeowners are branching out when it comes to shape. Houzz says 28 percent of remodeling homeowners opt for rectangular tile, while 23 percent choose hexagonal and 22 percent go with square. At 83 percent, tile is also a popular pick for shower walls.

    Specialty Toilets

Toilets are a popular item to replace in bathrooms this year. Houzz's survey found that more than two in five renovating homeowners installed toilets that have specialty features, including bidet seats (23 percent), bidet seats with water pressure (21 percent), self-cleaning functionality (19 percent), air dryers (17 percent) and heated seats (17 percent).
