The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) just announced a nationwide recall of Enoki mushrooms due to possible listeria contamination.

Enoki King Mushroom Farm of Ventura, Calif., has recalled packages of mushrooms that come in a clear plastic package with the description "Enoki Mushroom" in English and French with the lot code 4877 on the front in black ink. On the back of the package is the UPC code 860011505600. The affected products were distributed from California and New York through produce distributors and wholesalers and sold in retail stores nationwide, according to the FDA.

The recall was initiated during routine testing by the Maryland State Department of Health when they found the presence of listeria in a 5.3 oz package of Enoki. No illnesses have been reported at this time.

When consumed, listeria can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in children, frail, or elderly people as well as those with compromised immune systems. Other symptoms of listeria infection may present as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea, per the FDA. If you're experiencing any of these symptoms after eating these enoki mushrooms, contact your healthcare provider.

Consumers in possession of the product included in the recall are urged to return it to the place of purchase for a full refund or throw it out. If you have any questions, contact the company at 718.290.6617, Monday to Friday 8 AM to 4 PM PST.
